‘The View’: Shaquille O’Neal jokes, Bill Maher squirms – The TV Guy – Orlando Sentinel

“the View” today served drama with Bill Maher, then comedy with Shaquille O’Neal. It was a very unusual morning.

The retiredĀ basketball star praised the ABC chatfest as “a wonderful show” and warned Elisabeth Hasselbeck, “Liz, if you’ve got something to say, say it now.”

O’Neal had to follow Bill Maher, who sparred with a furious Hasselbeck. “I have nothing to pick on you for,” Hasselbeck told Shaq.

O’Neal was promoting a book, and so was Maher. the Maher segment revealed just how contentious talk television can become when hosts and guests don’t play nice. Hasselbeck sat next to Maher and ridiculed his comedy, especially a joke about her.

That joke: “Now that Hosni Mubarak released Lara Logan, he must put her intrepid hotness back on a plane to the United States immediately. in exchange, we will send Elisabeth Hasselbeck.”

Hasselbeck said she didn’t find it that funny; Maher countered that he does a show on HBO, that his comedy is on the edge and that Hasselbeck is a public figure.

Hasselbeck wondered if he would tell the joke again. Maher replied, after getting needled by Hasselbeck, “It really wouldn’t be worth it.”

Hasselbeck’s confrontation left her colleagues angling to move on. “It’s so great to here on ‘the View’ and to talk with all of you or one of you,” Maher shot back.

After Maher bashed Herman Cain, Rick Perry and GOP voters, Hasselbeck snapped at Maher, “You’re so brilliant. I actually feel smarter sitting next to you.”

Maher replied, “I feel like I’m in high school sitting next to you.”

The showdown seemed to stun everyone else. As the show ended, Barbara Walters said theĀ confrontation was proof that ‘the View” isn’t rehearsed.

As the Maher segment ended, Hasselbeck said she was glad to have a face-to-face talk with Maher. He replied, “did we really talk?”

Asked about the NBA lockout, former Orlando Magic star O’Neal quoted Barack Obama. “President Obama said it the best. He said it would be a shame that if billionaires and millionaires can’t come to some sort of agreement, and have regular people lose their jobs,” O’Neal said. “It’s a great, great business. Both sides make great points. … I just wish they would come to some sort of agreement.”

O’Neal says he no longer plays basketball, but joked that he wakes up at 2 p.m., eats breakfast, goes to his office and does nothing. “I watch this show and then I watch Maury Povich,” O’Neal said.

Whoopi Goldberg chuckled. She seemed stunned through the Maher segment.

Coming Wednesday on “the View”: Diane Keaton, who has a book to promote. the show airs at 11 a.m. weekdays on WFTV-Channel 9.
