IM coming to Xbox 360, keyboard accessory this summer

IM coming to Xbox 360, keyboard accessory this summer

by Christopher Grant { Apr 9th 2007 at 12:01AM }

Alright, so Gamespot’s leakier than a colander full of swiss cheese, but now we’ve got the official details (from Microsoft this time) on what’s included in the upcoming Xbox 360 Spring Dashboard update, due in one month beginning the week of may 7th. Integrating the 6 million Xbox Live users with the 260 million Windows Live Messenger users stands at the core of the upcoming update, allowing Xbox 360 users to communicate with up to six of their PC, Mac, or mobile phone bound friends at once.

To aid gamers in their instant messaging, Microsoft is also preparing a keyboard accessory for the Xbox 360 controller, which will connect via the headphone jack. The un-named, un-priced, and un-dated device, which currently exists only in the pristine renderings contained in the gallery below, is reportedly due “this summer.” In the interim, an on-screen or USB keyboard will do the trick.

Also included in the Spring update: a new Achievement pop-up that displays the name and associated gamerscore value; a separate Xbox Live Marketplace blade to help organize the perpetually overcrowded service; the ability to begin watching incomplete video downloads; and a new auto-off function to put that system to sleep after it’s done downloading. oh, and Major Nelson’s favorite new feature? Yup, the Dashboard will finally list what game is loaded in the disc tray. No more trial and error!

[Update: Xbox.com has been updated with a fairly repetitive list highlighting some additional features of the new update, including H.264 and MPEG-4 Part 2 video support (hrm?), WM-DRM streaming, the (now more informative) tray icon displays achievements and gamerscore for that game, and Xbox 1 games "show the name and image of the game."] Engadget has some additional details on the keyboard accessory, including the unfortunate news that the device prohibits the use of existing headsets and will come with its own.]

Lost Planet 2 Q & A discusses customization, weapons, plans for …

We’re sure that many of you Lost Planet fans out there have already got stuck in to the new Lost Planet 2 multiplayer demo which landed on Xbox Live Marketplace yesterday (don’t worry PS3 gamers, it will arriving later today on the PlayStation Network too!) and sees up to 16 players battling it out on a new map, Turbulent Jungle, in one of two modes, Elimination or Post Grab.

So you are probably in the mood to read through an interesting Q & A about Lost Planet 2 in which Capcom discusses customisation, new weapons, plans for DLC and even Project Natal.

Lost Planet 2 is set to release on the Xbox 360 and PS3 on the 11th of may around the world. Browse through our previous coverage to see how the title is shaping up with a whole bunch of screenshots, trailers and more information about the game. and don’t forget to read the Q and A below – thanks to XCN for the Q & A.

  • How has the world of E.D.N. III changed in the 10 years since the events of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition?

  • Capcom: The whole environment of the planet has completely changed due to global warming and as a result of this; animals and plants that were introduced by the humans began to flourish.

However, the humans are still not used to this dramatic change from the extreme cold condition that has started up diversification of the ecology. whilst the lives of the people did become a little easier thanks to this warmer climate, the rapid change also brought new threats and dangers.

  • How far does customisation go in Lost Planet 2?

  • Capcom: To create a truly individual look for your character you can change the body parts and backpack and there are dozens of different types and colour variants available. Weapon load outs, including grenades, can also be modified according to category prior to starting the game. In addition, there are eight different types of emote poses with more than 100 variations. each character also has two slots for skill sets where players can allocate preferred abilities. All of the above can be unlocked by earning points or earning achievements. We are also considering additional contents through DLC later on.

  • The Lost Planet 2 campaign is told in episodes, a trend emerging in many new games. how does this strengthen the story?

  • Capcom: We have decided to adopt this method because the players can look at the various events happening on the planet from different perspectives and get a real sense for the action on a planetary scale. this has the added benefit of making the gameplay more dynamic and exciting as we introduce new environments and enemies.

  • The snow’s out and now we’re in tropical jungles. how was it developing a totally new environment for Lost Planet 2?

  • Capcom: In order to incorporate the new ideas inside the game, we had to version up the MT Framework engine itself. as a result, the increased processing power allowed us to use more geometry and filters, it was also useful for working on improved AI. but please bear in mind, the Jungle is only one of the varied environments that the player will encounter during Lost Planet 2.

  • We saw Marcus and Dom from Gears of War in one of the trailers for Lost Planet 2. how was it to work with Epic to put these characters in the customisation options for Lost Planet 2?

  • Capcom: It was an exciting experience! We are all inspired by all the creations that Epic has released so far. Therefore, it was an honour to welcome those two famous characters in our game. I would like to thank Epic once again for giving us permission so readily.

  • What new weapons will we see in Lost Planet 2?

  • Capcom: The biggest innovation is a new class of support weapons – these are developed to be used to protect not only yourself but also your co-op friends. The abilities are varied depending on what you select, from a shield to protect yourself from attacks, one to recover your health and to the radar which would show you the location of the enemies.

  • What enemies can we expect in Lost Planet 2?

  • Capcom: What I can say here is that we still have Snow Pirates, VSs and AKs. and all of them have made enormous progress through evolution.

  • Do you have any plans for downloadable content?

  • Capcom: at the moment, we’re planning to create some costumes that are always popular by the LP fans. but we would like to think about something more in the future.

  • Do you think Natal could be integrated into shooters like Lost Planet 2?

  • Capcom: I think it can be used for a shooter game. Unfortunately, it would be a bit late for LP2 since the game requires a design with Natal support in mind.

  • Does Capcom have any other plans for Project Natal?

  • Capcom: Capcom is always up to a challenge, especially, as far as a new technology is concerned. However, we don’t have any projects we can tell you about at the moment.

  • Do you think the Lost Planet franchise has the potential to be adapted for film?

  • Capcom: actually we have already announced a film adaptation is in the works so watch this space.

Thanks for your time!

XBOX 360 Camera for $40, New Wireless Headset, and More Details Leaked!

$40 XBL Vision camera & UNO bundle detailed by MS source along with prices & dates for other 360 accessories

by Dan Choi { Jun 2nd 2006 at 12:26AM }

Our friendly anonymous source at Microsoft has provided us with a few more details concerning the 360 accessories announced back at E3.

Perhaps the most important involves the bundling of the Xbox Live Vision camera with a wired headset, the popular Live Arcade title UNO, and a month of Live Gold service for $39.99 when it releases in the States on September 19, 2006.

Granted, this is still an unofficial report (based on a leak of “official” info), so understand that you’re probably not gonna get much confirmation from MS until they’re good and ready to give it. if you’d like information on what other peripherals are coming out “Holiday 2006″ (so sometime in the 4th quarter) and at what price, read on for more.

  • New faceplates featuring Halo, Forza 2, & Viva Pinata for $19.99 each
  • Wireless headest with a 30-foot range for $59.99
  • 256MB Memory Unit for $59.99
  • Wireless gaming receiver for $19.99 (but it’ll go on sale in Winter 2007, unlike the others, probably around the month of February)

As stated before, the wireless gaming receiver will let you use wireless 360 peripherals — such as the wireless controller, wheel, and headset — on your PC. MS is apparently still considering the price point for the wireless racing wheel, as the $130 figure reported by us earlier has not been repeated in this round of releases (though it could still eventually be used). no official pricing has been given for the HD-DVD add-on, either.

Hopefully, Microsoft will provide some way of allowing those who have already purchased UNO on Live Marketplace to download a comparable title with the bundle (with or without camera functionality). Our source at Microsoft saw nothing that would indicate a unbundled SKU for the 360- and PC-compatible camera, so it looks like it’ll only be available at $40 for the foreseeable future. [Note that our earlier post on the pricing rumor contained a typo in the headline which might have led you to believe a second unbundled SKU for the camera would be available for $20; the figure was listed correctly in the body of the text, but the error in the title was ours and ours alone (our source had it right all along). Apologies to anyone who might have been misled -- the older post has been fixed.]

If these figures are what the peripherals in questions are eventually priced at, our hopes of a gradual easing of Memory Unit price points will have been thoroughly dashed (the better to service 360 Core owners in need of greater and/or cheaper storage options). Offering more value is good, but dropping the price of the 64MB MU to a proportional $14.99 would be an impressive show of good will to cost-conscious shoppers (however unlikely due to retail margin requirements). Not only that, those close to running out of, or who have already run out of, space on their 20GB hard drives are probably even more disappointed in the lack of hard-disk upgrades available in time for the two-tiered PS3 launch in November. Hopefully we’ll see more options (and price drops) next year.
