XBox 360 Vs PlayStation 3 Vs Wii – Who’s the Best?

The gaming industry is booming bigger than ever before. Gamers have more choices than ever when it comes to consoles. the days of Nintendo vs. Sega are over, new players have joined in the fray to do battle with the old guard. With three major choices in consoles, how do you know which one is for you? I’ll highlight some of the major advantages of each to help you in making the right decision.

#1 – Microsoft XBox 360

The XBox 360 has the most robust game library of all the systems, mostly because it has been out the longest. while some could argue the PlayStation 3 gets this honor because of its ability to play PlayStation 1 and 2 games, we are only taking into account games made specifically for the current system. At the time of this writing, the 360 has 1751 titles available compared to 607 for the PlayStation 3. the XBox 360 also boasts a much larger on-line community with tons of social media features built into the XBox Live Dasboard.

#2 – Sony PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 was designed to be more than a console, it was envisioned to be a home multimedia component. the biggest advantage that the PlayStation has over its competitors is a built in Blu-Ray player. this opens up another realm of home entertainment past just playing games. why pay $300+ for a Blu-Ray player alone when you could buy a PlayStation 3 for less that $100 more and having the gaming capabilities as well. the games also benefit from being on Blu-Ray discs because the capacity is much higher than DVD discs used in the XBox 360. Larger games may only take one disc on a PlayStation, where as they may take two or three on an XBox 360.

The Wii has revolutionized gaming to say the least. it was the first main stream console to successfully incorporate motion control into gaming. Gamers now have the option to control the characters onscreen by body movement, not just controller input. while Microsoft and Sony are now trying to catch up and introduce motion controllers on their current platforms, the Wii beat them to the punch big time. the Wii has a much smaller library of games and a smaller on-line community, but it is growing rapidly as developers learn new ways to harness the technology behind the Wii. the Wii is the top-selling system world-wide because it can be played by hard-core gamers and casual gamers as well.

Open Thread: How Do You Stream Internet Content to Your TV?

The key points of the new Apple TV are: a much lower price (now $99, compared to $229 for the first generation product), streamlined form (80% smaller), streaming functionality, no more local storage, Netflix and YouTube access, and 99c TV show rentals.

Other ways to access Web content on your TV include: modern Internet-connected TVs; online gaming devices like Sony PlayStation 3 and X-Box 360; P2P software; Set-top boxes like TiVo (specifically, its Premiere offering released in March); streaming software for computers, such as playon; wireless USB display adapter sets; special cables to hook a computer up to a TV.

Of course, there’s still the matter of accessing good content. All of the online TV players have been busy doing deals with TV and movie distributors, a process which is far from being worked through. meanwhile, many consumers have used P2P services like BitTorrent to get such content for free.

The video below from the Google TV announcement shows the (potential) benefits of streaming Web content to your TV:

I myself use a combination of Sony Playstation 3 and the P2P client Vuze in order to stream the occasional TV show and movie to my TV. although it converts online video to a PS3 compatible format, it’s still not a completely satisfactory solution. Sometimes the sound doesn’t work, or the video is choppy, and so on. So I’m looking forward to purchasing one of the upcoming devices from Apple, Boxee, Roku or Google.

Do you stream content from the Internet into your TV? if so, tell everyone how you do it in the comments below.

Microsoft shows off Project Natal motion-sensing control

Ads by Google’; } } //only display the google bottom unit if there is no chitika ad document.getElementById(‘top_unit’).innerHTML=s; } //–>

“You are the controller.” no, it’s not some new Zen proverb for gamers, it’s how Microsoft describes its new motion-sensing, controller-free technology code-named Project Natal. following details leaked a few weeks ago when the US patent office released documents, Microsoft has given a demonstration of the technology that looks and behaves a little like a Sony PlayStation Eye on some serious steroids.

The add-on will be compatible with all past, present and future versions of the Xbox 360 and combines an RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone and custom processor in one compact device designed to sit on or below a TV, just like the Wii’s sensor bar. Microsoft says this combination of features allows the Project Natal sensor to track full body movement in 3-D, while responding to voice commands, directions and even a shift of emotion in your voice.

Microsoft has sent prototypes to all the main game developers and was able to demo a Breakout-like game called Ricochet and a paint program called Paint Party at E3. Also on show was an in game avatar created by Fable designer Peter Molyneux. The avatar interacted with the player by looking in his or her direction, responding to live conversation, and even accepting hand-drawn messages scanned into the game.

Microsoft claims the sensor is not light-dependent, can recognize you just by looking at you, and doesn’t just react to key words but understands what you’re saying.

Steven Spielberg even made an appearance to talk up the potential of the device in offering a more immersive gaming experience and to announce that he was working on games utilizing the technology.

The Wii’s motion sensitive controller is credited with opening up the gaming audience to include those that had previously shunned video games. Even without the processing power or HD graphical beauty of the Xbox 360 or PS3, the Wii has been able to claim top spot in the current generation (non-handheld) console war thanks largely to the appeal of its motion sensitive controller to new and casual gamers. so it’s not surprising to see Microsoft seeking to counter slowing Xbox 360 sales by making a play for a bigger slice of the casual gaming crowd.

There’s no doubt the Project Natal announcement has got people excited. You just have to check out the video below and get an idea of what is possible to understand why. but all this excitement comes before any details on price, date or even an official name for the device have been provided. The key question of accuracy also remains unanswered. Nintendo and Sony are sticking with a physical controller for their upcoming Wii MotionPlus and Playstation Motion Controllers respectively. both apparently offer impressive accuracy, so Microsoft will have to ensure their device can cut the mustard accuracy-wise to live up to its promise.

If Microsoft can deliver, it will not only open up the prospect of Minority Report style menu controls and new gaming possibilities – it could also mean a dramatic fall in the number of 35 year old gamers with arthritic hands. a worthy goal to be sure.
