For Colts' Jim Caldwell, a title will outweigh all the 'what ifs'

With 14-0 Indianapolis seemingly bound for an undefeated regular season and a shot at joining the 1972 Miami Dolphins as the only unbeaten champions in NFL history, he yanked quarterback Peyton Manning and other key starters with a 15-10 third-quarter lead to rest them for postseason.
The decision opened the door to a 29-15 victory by the New York Jets and to harsh criticism of Caldwell by fans and members of the media for his seeming disregard for history. the second-guessers resurfaced when Indianapolis displayed 60-minute firepower in a convincing 30-17 victory against the Jets in the AFC Championship Game.
Even if Caldwell joins Don McCafferty (Baltimore Colts, 1971) and George Seifert (San Francisco 49ers, 1990) as the only rookie head coaches to win Super Bowls, he may face the ultimate “What if?”
What if he had played the conclusion of that first Jets game — and a 30-7 road loss to the hapless Buffalo Bills in a regular-season finale rendered meaningless — with the intensity brought to the first 14?
But to Caldwell, 55, his life and career have always been about keeping to what he believes. and in his first meeting with the team last March, he assured players he would avoid unncessary wear and tear to keep them primed for a possible championship run.
When asked about the difficulty of succeeding accomplished Tony Dungy in Indianapolis, he says, “All I had to do is sort of make certain that I was keeping my promise. I wanted to keep them hungry, fresh and make certain that they’re well-prepared. and I think we’ve been able to do that to a certain extent.”
Caldwell has done that to a great extent.
Middle linebacker Gary Brackett notes how Indianapolis’ defense flew to the ball in decisive postseason victories against the Baltimore Ravens (20-3) and the Jets as evidence of how rested and ready the Colts are.
“We can play the full 60 minutes on defense,” he says, “and guys wouldn’t mind a bit.”
Center Jeff Saturday refers to the 24 unanswered points the Colts ran off in a rematch against the Jets that turned lopsided. “Look at the third and fourth quarter and we took it over,” he says. “We were fresh.”
Says Caldwell, “I do believe when you are fresh, maybe you can make up for a mistake here or there with a little extra speed.”
Caldwell worked with Dungy for seven seasons, the first three years as his quarterbacks coach and then as assistant head coach. he so distinguished himself during that time with a soft-spoken but self-assured approach that he was named to succeed his friend and mentor the year before the potentially difficult change was made.
Dungy, an NBC analyst, is vehement in defending his replacement.
“People don’t understand that 16-0 was never the goal,” he says. “The goal is to win the gold medal, not all the heats leading up to the gold medal.”
Dungy believes Caldwell’s accomplishments may be overlooked because he inherited so much talent. History, of course, is littered with coaches who tinkered with powerhouses and ultimately brought them down.
“He’s just done an outstanding job. I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves,” Dungy says. “People don’t realize how tough it is to win 14, 15, 16 games.
“We had a good thing going — and he built on it.”
While Caldwell devoloped a vast coaching resume since he served as a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa, his alma mater, in 1977, he gained his only previous head coaching experience when he guided Wake Forest from 1993-2000 as the first African-American football coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history.
The 26-63 record was not what athletic director Ron Wellman wanted. the man was everything he sought.
Wellman describes the dismissal as the “hardest decision I’ve made in my professional career because of the person, who he is.”
It says everything about Caldwell that, as he exited his last meeting with the shaken athletic director, he stopped to ask, “Are you OK?”
