The Nintendo Wii was the first company on the market with the motion sensor technology. Then the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 have each produced their own similar style of movement technology. so which is the best buy for my dollar?

The PlayStation 3 has just released the PlayStation move controller. You first need to have purchase a PlayStation eye. which is a camera, that can recognize the movements of the controller. the cost of the PlayStation bundle, which includes: PlayStation move controller, playstation eye camera and sports game sells for about $100. what is the main selling feature of this controller? for many of us, who don’t have a Nintendo Wii, the PlayStation move now gives you that Wii like feel playing your PS3. some gamers believe that the PlayStation move controller is more accurate than the Nintendo Wii’s controller. the move has better feel for many of the different movements you produce during game play, which the Wii tends to miss at times.

Not saying the Nintendo Wii by any means is a failure. it is far from that, it is perceived as a revolution in the gaming industry. the only area the Nintendo Wii fails in comparison to the Xbox and the PS3 has to be the games. the Wii is so full of nonsense games, which no one wants to purchase. at the same time, the library for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 games are relatively small in their own accounts for similar movement games. Largely in part to the fact they have both been just released, but still don’t have any games worth buying to make the cost of the PlayStation move or Xbox kinetic worth the price tag.

The Xbox 360 just released the kinetic, which has its own motion sensor technology as well. the main difference in the kinetic is, it will run you about $150 to purchase brand new. that seems an awful lot of money for a cool gadget. the kinetic does have voice recognition, so you can tell your Xbox to turning own and off. You also have the ability to go through the console commands by voice which is fabulous. the kinetic plugs into your USB port on your Xbox and needs to sit on the top of your TV very similar to the Nintendo Wii. the kinetic isn’t a controller at all, but a device which enables the gamer’s body to be the controller. This is very unique in the fact; all of your bodies’ movements make a difference in games.

The PlayStation move and the Nintendo Wii, seem very similar. they both operate in the same manor; just now you can mimic a Nintendo Wii with your PS3. the Xbox kinetic really seems like an innovative approach. it has more of an original feel, not just copying what some else has already done

Before I get started, I feel that I need to let everyone know that I am a Playstation 3 owner, but I assure all of you that I don’t have as much bias as most console owners do towards their systems. my roommate has an XBOX and I spent a fair amount of time playing Halo 3 and Gears of War with him, so I have a lot of respect for the console.

I bought a PS3 because I had been waiting for one ever since I got my PS2. I tended to stay loyal to Sony mainly because they had done so well with their previous systems and they had games that blew the Nintendo 64 away, which was the system I had in elementary school (bad decision).

When PS3 came out, XBOX 360 was already in the houses of millions of people and the pricey $600 price tag on the PS3 held gamers at bay for a while, who hoped they could keep themselves busy with a PSP until the price went down. I waited until a year after it came out to buy one and by then I had gotten used to satisfying my video game needs with the XBOX 360.

One major difference between the two systems is the technical specs. PS3 fans can boast that the system has superior technology and thus better graphics and more memory on the blu-ray discs. XBOX 360 can argue that their library has more popular games like the Halo series and Gears of War.

From what I’ve seen personally, there doesn’t seem to be a huge difference in graphics between the two systems; my friend and I each got copies of call of Duty 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4 for our respective systems and I can’t honestly say there was a difference between my PS3 and his XBOX 360. this is just one of my theories but when games are made for both systems, the limits on graphics can only go as far as the XBOX 360 can handle while the PS3 could go a lot further, but then again, it’s just a theory.

After the discontinuation of HD DVDs, I pretty much thought that XBOX 360 was done for because I figured that if people had the option to buy a gaming system and a DVD player in one (a PS3) they would; though it didn’t seem to upset the XBOX 360′s sales that much.

Most people, like me, were floored when it was revealed at E3 that Final Fantasy XIII was coming to the XBOX, I have to say I am very impressed with Microsoft’s strategy of buying rights for games once exclusively for the PS3 and keeping games for XBOX out of the PS3 library.

Despite the aggressive plan of Microsoft to get the rights of games once exclusively for the PS3, I am going to make a prediction that Sony with have the upper hand in the console wars for a few main reasons: we haven’t begun to see the possibilities the PS3′s hardware is capable of. The Blu-ray disc can hold much for memory than the 360′s DVD. also, PS3′s online is free, and XBOX live is about $50 a year.

So ultimately, my advice to the person looking to buy one of these fine consoles would be to invest in a PS3, since it will probably have a longer shelf life than the 360, but if you can find a 360 for extra cheap, getting it wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

The week ahead, New Releases: 25/04 – 29/04

It’s Easter as you may have gathered, and while there is a big wedding coming up this weekend, which means another four days off for most of us, that’s not stopping publishers, especially SEGA from bringing us some new games.

The two big titles hitting this week both come from SEGA, in the form of Virtua Tennis 4 for PS3, Xbox 360, DS and Wii, and also Thor, which also hits the big three consoles, in addition to the Nintendo DS.

The only other titles of note really are Persona 3 for the PSP, and if you are a PS3 fitness fan, Zumba Fitness.

So a quiet week, no doubt in preparation for May, which is bringing us some rather big games.

PS3 Blu-ray 3D playback now available

It has been a long time coming, but a firmware update is now available that enablesPlayStation 3 owners to play Blu-ray 3D films.

The update was released yesterday, a day before it was expected. Upon downloading firmware version 3.50, people can watch the relatively small number of Blu-ray 3D films on their PlayStation 3 consoles attached to their3D TVs.

However, Blu-ray 3D playback is just one component in the upgrade. In addition, Sony has added a feature that allows game developers to integrate Facebook into their titles. According to Sony, supported games will let people “access public information–including user name, profile, uploaded photos, and friends list–to enhance their gameplay experience.” the company didn’t say which titles support the new offering.

The PlayStation 3′s firmware version 3.50 also includes a “grief reporting function.” According to Sony, people can now send messages directly to the company from their XrossMediaBar (XMB) about any “inappropriate messages they receive from other PlayStation Network users.”

Sony’s firmware update is available as a free download from the PlayStation 3.

New York Ranks 1st In iPad Owners; California Greenest State For Gadgets

Its probably no surprise that California was ranked first for being the most green when it comes to gadgets, heck more people in that state hug trees more than any other stateyes, they hug trees, hard. Seriously, though, the data actually comes from a new report from Retrevo based on the US consensus data and you might be surprised about which state ranked where with what gadget.

As the headline states, New York was first when it came to iPad owners and also ranked first for emerging technology, including netbooks, smartphones and Blu-Ray players.

Probably to no ones surprise, the Arizona metro areas ranked number one for using old-school technology, including CRT TVs and VCRs. Of course, illegal immigrants arent going to be first in line to buy a brand new Blu-Ray player or iPhone and they certainly arent going to be first in line to purchase a 3D stereoscopic HDTV.

Also worth noting is that the San Francisco Bay area ranked first for streaming media. I guess paying for cable or DirectTV just isnt on their agenda, but using a PS3, PC or Xbox 360 to grab TV and movies is a higher priority for the coastal bunch.

Hulu due for PlayStation 3 in July, Xbox 360 in 2011

While it might not quite be on artistic par as Europe’s score with arthouse film streaming service MUBI, the announcement of Hulu Plus — an ad-supported and subscription based alternative to the current TV streaming service — has also brought word that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be getting their own on-dash version.

The guided tour of the $9.99 per month service notes that the PS3 version will launch in July with full seasons of current programming (full list here), along with full series archives of shows like Buffy, X-Files and Arrested Development (full list of those here, too). an Xbox 360 version will follow after the holidays.

Currently the service is invite only, with the iPhone and iPad viewers already available as a free download on the App Store.
