Seen and heard

Washington celebrated Halloween two days early, sporting blackjerseys and pants as part of a stadium-wide “Blackout” promotion.the UW student section joined them, donning matching black T-shirts- except for the eight brave (and possibly soused) souls whopainted their chests black, then spelled the word “blackout” inwhite paint.

The Huskies consider their black gear lucky: They won both timesthey wore it a year ago, a Nov. 18 win over UCLA at Husky Stadiumand a Dec. 30 Holiday Bowl win over Nebraska.

Arizona was the more conservative dresser Saturday, wearingthrowback-inspired white helmets, white jerseys and navy pants. TheWildcats have worn their “traditional” uniforms in each of TimKish’s two games as interim head coach.

Saturday’s late kickoff allowed us to explore Seattle during themorning. Forget the Space Needle: We visited arguably the nation’smost hyped donut shop.

Top Pot Doughnuts in Seattle’s Capitol Hill district was worthit. We indulged in a maple bar ($1.89) the size of a man’s forearmand a hot apple cider, and we weren’t alone.

Top Pot – the name comes from their sign, which was originallyfor a “Top Spot” Chinese restaurant before the “S” fell off – has acult following in a city that’s famously finicky about its food.Locals swear by their maple bars: Seahawks wide receiver GoldenTate made headlines when, in summer 2010, he let himself into thedonut shop through an open door after a night on the town. Tatecalled it “a foolish mistake.”

“But,” he said at the time, “if you ever want maple bars, that’sthe place to go.”

Number of UA players from the state of Washington. Freshmanlinebacker Sir Thomas Jackson, a product of Seattle’s O’Dea HighSchool, did not make the trip.

Husky Stadium has two weeks to live. On Nov. 6, constructioncrews will break ground on a $250 million renovation that willmodernize the creaky old stadium with luxury boxes and betterseating while giving the Huskies an even bigger homefieldadvantage.

Washington will play the 2012 season at CenturyLink Field, homeof the NFL’s Seahawks, while crews bulldoze and rebuild the lowerbowl and south-side stands, add permanent seats (and not bleachers)in the east-side end zone and construct a football operationsbuilding complete with locker rooms, meeting rooms and offices.

The biggest changes will come on the field itself. Crews willremove the running track that encircles the field. new stands willbe moved closer to the field, putting fans almost on top of bothteams. a purple stripe behind both sidelines, signifying how closethe stands will be, brags that “in 2013, the noise will starthere.”

Hall, Fischer stay home

The Wildcats’ thin secondary meant a pair of injured players,linebacker Jake Fischer and safety Adam Hall, were left behind forthe weekend trip to Washington. Blake Brady and Kyrel Parker, tworarely used defensive backs, took their place. Coach Mike Stoopsmade a point to bring Hall, Fischer and running back Greg Nwoko onthe UA’s first three road trips of the season. Saturday, only Nwoko- who is close to returning from offseason knee surgery -remained.

Arizona dressed only three quarterbacks, Nick Foles, BrysonBeirne and the redshirting Matt Scott, against the Huskies.Freshman Daxx Garman remained in Tucson because of an undisclosedmedical issue. Garman missed a practice this week to addressit.

Times Arizona Wildcats freshman Tyler Slavin had played defensebefore Saturday night. Coaches moved him from wide receiver, hisnatural position, to defensive back. he entered the game in thesecond quarter and was promptly sent on a blitz.

    Today it is really, really cold here. So I decided it was time to make Oyster Stew for my husband and a big pot of Beef Vegetable Soup for me. I am also allergic to shellfish so no Oyster Stew for me.
    To go with the stew and soup, we MUST have cornbread. This is my first try at Gluten Free Buttermilk Cornbread and I am very happy with the results. It is really good and light and tastes like non-Gluten Free Cornbread. And, that is a good thing.


    1 cup cornmeal
    1/3 cup gluten free flour
    1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon sugar
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 egg, beaten
    1 cup buttermilk

    Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Add the oven, a 8 inch iron skillet with shortening (I used bacon grease) to preheat.

    Mix the dry ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Add the egg and buttermilk. Mix thoroughly.

    Pour into preheated skillet and bake for 20 minutes. I took mine out after 15 minutes and it was perfect. Depends on your oven.
