Microsoft Takes Cheap Shot at Nintendo and Wii Owners
Raising the ante in the video game wars, Microsoft is bringing out a new version of the Xbox 360 game machine that has a bigger hard drive, better high-definition video support and a stylish black finish, not an insignificant feature in a world where looking cool ranks high.
The idea is to appeal to an elite class of hardcore game players who would like a little more of everything.
Todays games-and-entertainment enthusiast has an insatiable appetite for digital high-definition content, said Peter Moore, corporate vice president for Microsofts interactive entertainment business, in Redmond, Wash.
The Xbox 360 Elite, which is to be announced today and will be in stores in late April, will have a list price of $479, or $80 more than the Xbox 360 Pro and $180 more than the basic Xbox 360. The new model has a 120-gigabyte hard drive, in contrast to the standard models 20-gigabyte drive. It also has a high-definition multimedia interface port and cable and a wireless controller and headset. Current Xbox 360 owners can buy the new 120-gigabyte hard drive as a separate accessory for $179.
Microsoft is clearly hoping to fill what it sees as a hole at the top end of the market. The Nintendo Wii has been outselling the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 in recent months, but that system is largely positioned as a family-friendly game machine that can be purchased for $50 less than the lowest-priced Xbox. The Sony system is priced higher than both the Nintendo and the Microsoft systems, with the cheapest model priced at $499.
Both Microsoft and Sony have positioned their consoles as entertainment hubs, not just for playing sophisticated video games but also for listening to music and viewing downloaded movies and television shows.
John Rodman, group product manager for the Xbox platform and Xbox Live, pointed to a recent Microsoft survey that revealed that nearly 40 percent of the time that Xbox 360 users spent with their consoles was for activities other than gaming.
Yet when it comes to gaming, Xbox 360 users are serious, Mr. Rodman says. six out of 10 Xbox 360 users use Xbox Live, Microsofts online gaming service.
We dont feel like the Wii customer and the Xbox customer are the same thing, he said. We think that as soon as the Wii customer turns 14 they want something else.
James L. McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester Research, said that Microsoft hoped to encourage customers to spend more money downloading movies and games, which require considerable hard-drive space.

Strategy Analytics predicts Sony PS3 to triumph current games console battle

It looks like the war in the console gaming terrain is getting fiercer with each day. ahead of this week’s Games Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, the latest forecasts published by Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service should ruffle more than a few feathers. according to the estimation Sony’s PS3 games console will seemingly sell more units than its rivals over the lifetime of the current generation.

With the global console installed based expected to reach 220 million in 2010, Sony’s PS3 it appears holds chances of emerging victorious in the present games console battle. the report ‘Taming the Waves: Games Console Life Cycles and Platform Competition’ reveals that even though the global sales up to date of the Nintendo Wii have surpassed those of the PS3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360, the PS3 is here to stay.
It predicts that five years after the Wii has been replaced, the PS3 will still be a commercial platform. Reportedly, the lifetime PS3 sales are anticipated to reach 127 million units as compared to 103 million Wii units.
“Nintendo has done a great job with the Wii in bringing console games to new audiences,” comments David Mercer, Principal Analyst and report author. “But its sales are now falling, particularly in mature markets, and its installed base will peak in 2011. Ownership of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will hit their highest points between 2012 and 2014.”
As per the report, worldwide TV games console sales in 2010 will drop by 9% to 47.5 million units. Moreover sales of the Wii are expected to touch 17.5 million units with the PS3 reaching 14.0 million, the Xbox 360 10.5 million and the PS2 5.5 million. Additionally the global installed base of consoles augments in growth in spite of the falling sales. It should reach more than 220 million by the end of this year.
“Console industry cycles have given the industry major planning challenges for many years,” adds Mercer. “There are signs that this volatility may be moderating as platforms add home entertainment and social networking services beyond pure gaming.”
Nevertheless, Strategy Analytics models point that ownership of existing systems will surge in 2011. At that stage vendors will need to introduce new systems in order to maintain industry growth.
