For example, using forwarding and filters, it’s possible to forward messages from your work email account automatically to a specific folder or label in your personal account. this is also common on calendars, where you could give your Google Apps for Business Calendar work account full proxy access to allowing you to see and manage it through your personal Google Calendar. you can even use Google Voice to forward calls from one of your numbers to the other. Some of these options are available through other systems as well, like Exchange with Outlook.

4. Multiple Accounts

LogMeIn IgnitionHaving multiple accounts, similar to using multiple login profiles on a computer, is another possibility. though Android phones don’t provide multiple profiles, they do allow syncing with multiple Google accounts. Google’s Calendar app uses this to display calendars from multiple accounts, all comingled on the same screen. Google’s Gmail app does something similar, but keeps the data from multiple accounts separate, allowing you to switch among them. you can even have different notification sounds for each account, so you know by the tone when work or personal email arrives. Windows Phone 7.5 just added some limited syncing options as well, allowing access to 25 Google calendars on a handset, and a “Send Mail As” option that can include your work email address.

5. Multiple Apps

For those instances where one app won’t work for both work and personal purposes, then two apps will have to do. On any phone this is common for email, where you might use the Gmail or Yahoo mobile apps for personal mail, and the Email app which can use Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync for access to your company’s Exchange server. If you want to keep your Web browser bookmarks, cookies, and cache separate, you can use the default smartphone browser for personal while installing another browser, like Dolphin, on Android and iOS for work.

What’s best?

What method works best for you depends on your circumstances. In general, comingling your data isn’t a good idea, and many companies have policies against accessing your work mail through a personal email account. In a business where data security is vital, MDM or virtual machine software is best. If you always have a strong data connection from your smartphone, a remote desktop app will also keep sensitive data safe. Short of that, most people are likely to have a mix of apps that support multiple accounts, like Gmail on Android for their email, while using multiple apps for other activities where one app can’t do both.

Nintendo’s boss is bullish on future of 3DS despite smartphone dominance, reports CIARA O’BRIEN 

ANY DOUBTS about the smartphone’s effect on the games industry will have been dispelled this week.

Nintendo, which has dominated the handheld gaming market for more years than we can remember, is on track to report its first loss in March. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said the company was facing its worst results since it entered the games business.

Nintendo’s woes aren’t all down to the handheld games sector; it also faces more competition in the console market from Microsoft and Sony, which have both opted to introduce gesture control in the past 18 months. Add in an ageing console and the promise of a new Wii for 2012, and you can see where the problems have taken hold.

But smartphones certainly haven’t helped. Sales of the 3DS haven’t reached expectations, resulting in a price cut in an effort to boost sales of the 3D-enabled games device. At its original launch price of about €270, it was a bit of an investment. and, with more and more high-quality games available for smartphones and tablets (more versatile than the handheld), it wasn’t surprising Nintendo decided last summer that a price cut was in order. Irish gamers can now get their hands on one for about €170.

Is the future of the handheld device in jeopardy? no, says Iwata. he pointed to a jump in 3DS sales following the launch of a number of software titles for the device in the end stages of last year as evidence that Nintendo has disproved the theory that demand for dedicated handheld gaming devices no longer exists.

Iwata is also confident that Nintendo losses on the 3DS can be made up for in software sales.

Sony obviously feels just as confident about the future of its games devices, with its PlayStation Vita only weeks away from debuting on the Irish market. like Nintendo, Sony is betting heavily that gamers still want something they can play that isn’t their smartphone. (Sony is trying to tap into the social networking trend by offering a 3G-enabled device.)

The Vita, due for launch on February 22nd in Europe and North America, has already been on sale for more than a month in Japan, where it sold 325,000 units in its first few days. By January 5th it had sold a total of 500,000.

How European consumers will take to the PS Vita will be known in a matter of weeks.

Reuters reports that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said the Wii U will arrive in the US, Europe, Australia and Japan by the end of 2012.

This will take advantage of the end-of-year shopping season, which Nintendo hopes will drive sales of the new console.

The Wii U will offer a touchscreen tablet-shaped controller and precision motion controls. The controller will display information that won’t appear on TV screens. The console itself will also offer HD graphics.

It will be the first of the next-generation games consoles launched, as rumours suggest the next Xbox – which many have dubbed the ‘Xbox 720’ thanks to the lack of an official name – will see a release by the end of 2013.

Reports have said it could be six times more powerful than the Xbox 360 and that developers will get development kits for the console in August of this year.

Kotaku reports that the next Xbox could be able to play Blu-ray discs but may include an “anti-used game system” which may mean the console won’t be able to play used games. It could be used to aid publishers who lose money from used games sold by gaming retailers, though this rumour is unconfirmed from Microsoft.

The next Xbox could also have a smaller controller and could ship with a new version of the Kinect hands-free motion sensor.

As for the next PlayStation, Kazuo Hirai, who is responsible for Sony’s video game division, believes the PlayStation 3 has a “10-year cycle” and that Sony will not stray from this. this could mean that the next PlayStation may not emerge until 2016.

Apple [AAPL] has won yet another significant battle against its litigious iOS copycats, with the International Trade Commission (ITC) declaring the company did not violate patents owned by S3 Graphics.

ITC investigation ‘terminated’

That’s a big deal. S3 Graphics is now owned by HTC, which acquired the company and its patent portfolio for $300 million in July this year.

The commission reversed its own preliminary ruling in which it declared some Apple products had indeed violated S3 patents involving texture compression, as used in 3D. (Specifically, US Patent No. 6,658,146 directed to systems and methods for compressing images and US Patent No. 6,683,978).

Having reversed that decision, the ITC has declared its investigation "terminated" [PDF], dashing the hopes of the HTC Bold manufacturer.

The brave and the bold

HTC and Apple have a series of outstanding litigation between them. This litigation is part of what is believed to have driven HTC’s purchase of S3 in the first place, as that company attempted to shore up its case against Apple. That attempt now having failed, it can’t look too good for HTC in terms of achieving victory elsewhere.

HTC General Counsel Grace Lei said: "We are disappointed, but respect the ITC’s decision." HTC may appeal against the decision.

Apple, Microsoft, Google and Android device makers have been racing to acquire patents to protect their smartphone and tablet offerings in recent months, as the battles between all these parties for the future of mobile devices intensifies.

At present, litigation between Apple and others seems to be moving slowly in the iPad/iPhone manufacturer’s favor: Samsung has been forced to change its product in many markets, or remove them from sale entirely; HTC has lost its S3 graphics case.

The ITC should rule in a separate dispute between HTC and Apple in December. The preliminary decision so far has been that HTC violated two Apple patents — will this also be reversed?

Will Apple gun for Google next?

It is open to question as to Apple’s next move. as it slowly prevails in many of its worldwide cases, will it eventually feel it has sufficient judicial support to chase after its true foe, Google, for the imitative elements it has identified within the Android OS?

Apple’s departed co-founder, Steve Jobs, famously promised to "destroy Android", as he felt many of its ideas had been taken from Apple in what he felt to be a vast betrayal of trust.

In a sense, Google should take responsibility for those patents it has used without permission within the Android OS. In doing so it hasn’t just exposed itself to criticism, it has exposed its manufacturing partners to the risk of legal attack.

With Apple now prevailing in many of the outstanding cases, it is only a question of time until the mud cast at Cupertino by Google and its allies will be washed away, leaving the search giant clearly exposed for failing to pay adequate regard to copyright or intellectual property matters.

These complaints are not new. In its time the company has seen similar accusations from book publishers, the music industry, shopping and price comparison websites and search engine competitors.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s Fire continues to attract value-conscious consumers, despite the string of negative reviews. With Amazon set to introduce a low-cost smartphone next year, Apple and Amazon seemingly have many Android partners held within a painful, litigious, highly-competitive and not especially profitable vice.

This game can only lead to industry consolidation. Smaller smartphone players will consume each other; some big names will quit the market, and Apple will hit many players right between the eyes with the release of the iPhone 5 next year.

Ignoring how late this move is, here’s the bigger problem: Today’s smartphone industry is less about hardware and more about software, platforms, and services. but I can’t think of a single time that Sony has impressed me with anything software-related.

The Sony I know has always had the potential to make high-quality hardware, and to miniaturize things in an elegant way. The Sony MiniDisc player I had in the late 90s was a great little device. The Sony Ericsson phones I owned from 2002-2005 were some of the best around. Sony’s Vaio laptops have always seemed like nice hardware, relative to the Windows competition. And Sony’s cameras are fine. but that stuff is just one part of the gadget business now.

What is Sony possibly going to do with software that would give it a distinct advantage over the iPhone, other Android devices, or even Microsoft phones? some sort of PSP integration might have seemed ground-breaking half a decade ago, but now Apple is the handheld gaming leader. not much else about Sony is interesting or must-buy anymore. what, are they going to make a Blu-ray phone?

There is still an opportunity, I suppose, to become one of the better, high-end Android phone makers, and to do something with the PSP brand. That doesn’t excite me, but perhaps that’s where to start. It’s just hard to see Sony becoming a leader or building a great business here.

Coming as a surprise to even the most ardent Apple fans and supporters, on May 26, 2010, Apple officially became a higher valued company than Microsoft. At the close of the day, Wall Street had valued Apple at $220 billion, verse a valuation of $219 billion for Microsoft. while Microsoft does have much stronger revenues ($58 billion vs. just shy of $43 billion for Apple), this only makes the closing numbers even more interesting. Much of the value placed on stocks hinges on how the company is expected to perform in the future, clearly the feeling on Wall Street is that Apple will enjoy a brighter future than that of Microsoft. Obviously, this news is of great interest to Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimization specialists, as the shift may create new opportunities and introduce different methods and strategies to their processes. however, in this article we will examine how Apple overcame Microsoft, and what it will take for them to remain in the lead.

After surpassing Microsoft, Apple has now become the second most valuable company in the western hemisphere, behind only Exxon ($278 billion). Obviously this growth on behalf of Apple has much to do with the success of its hardware, as its computers, phones and devices have become household objects and must own products for people across the globe. however, they also have some very profitable software suites their loyal customers can be counted on to keep moving off store shelves. despite this software success, they have not been able to make much of a dent in the Operating system wars, as their install base has remained relatively flat over the last few years. while they make money from software, they are making history with their hardware.

Microsoft can almost be viewed as a polar opposite of Apple. making most of their money off software, Microsoft has long supplied the vast majority of Operating Systems to the computers of the world. They also enjoy huge sales from their Office products and many other software suites. where Apple has seen limited success with software, Microsoft has suffered the same fate with their hardware experiments. Their game consoles are constantly losing them cash (though they make up for this with profitable game software), and their hardware such as the Zune and their tablet computers have failed to catch on in the marketplace. Additionally, they have made some poor investments (purchasing tragically under performing game developer Rare for a staggering $375 million), and are hit with multiple hundreds of millions of dollars in fines and legal fees every year. Still, none of this has stopped them from being the second most successful business in the country, until now.

Apple has earned their lead through constant innovation, both with product designs and functionality. When the iPod launched, there were already dozens of other mp3 player solutions on the market. Apple’s product became the standard due to its clever design, large capacity and the support of the iTunes platform. the iPhone has earned its popularity on the strength of its design, functionality and support of the app store. the common thread in these two success stories is the supportive environment Apple launches its products into, and the constant tweaking and improving these products receive. If Apple can continue to put out quality products, back them with impeccable infrastructure and keep a steady stream of upgraded versions available to its customers, there is no reason their dominance should end anytime soon. They do have to be on the lookout for a few things, however.

First, you can never count Microsoft out. the folks at Redmond could, any day, surprise the world with a new product announcement. also, while their hardware offerings have been less than stellar thus far, this does not mean that the trend will continue in the future. They got where they are by being aware of their competition, and outdoing them. In short, they will not take this lying down. secondly, Apple must be careful to not alienate its customers. Many Apple buyers are hit with intense waves of buyer’s remorse when a purchased product receives an upgrade shortly after they acquire it, leaving them with a brand new, yet outdated piece of hardware. Even as the iPad was in the pre-release stage, its noticeable lack of features showed consumers that Apple was no longer truly innovating, but holding back features strictly to roll them out in future product iterations. Finally, there is the possibility that, in trying to conquer all types of media (TV, music, hardware, computers, devices, etc) they will spread themselves too thin.

A similar situation was already seen with their Apple TV line which, when it did not launch to an enthusiastic reception, seemed to drop down on their priority list, leaving customers disappointed at the lack of follow through their device received. With that said, as long as Apple can keep a solid perspective, remain alert and stay the innovation course they have ridden to this point, there is no reason why their lead over Microsoft cannot continue well into the future.

The gaming world is abuzz with rumors of a new offering from Microsoft, provisionally codenamed the Xbox 720. if we examine the evidence, it does seem clear that Microsoft are gearing up to amaze consumers with a next generation games console that will make previously releases seem basic and redundant.

Though the facts are hard to come by, there is enough information available to piece together a picture of what the 720 will be like. one thing is for certain, the specs on this new console will involve a significant technological leap forward. When we look at an Xbox 360, and compare it with the latest PC’s, we can see just how much progress has taken place in the years since the 360 was released. if Microsoft want to continue to hold a dominating market share of games consoles sales, they will need to come up with a product that more than matches the latest PC’s.

One area in which there has been a lot of development recently is in CPU power. Various bloggers familiar with the inner workings at Microsoft predict that the 720 will come with a cutting edge AMD fusion chip, or possibly even a new Ivy Bridge Intel special. There is huge pressure from the designers of blockbuster games for console manufacturers to use the most powerful chips in their upcoming products.

Storage is another area in which we can expect to see very obvious developments. PC’s with one terabyte drives are now common place, perhaps Microsoft will steal a march on their competitors by producing the 720 with a cloud storage feature, this would be the easiest way to ensure that the amount of media which can be used is not limited. Other alternatives, such as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, will perhaps only have a short shelf life.

Whether you love it or hate it, it needs to be stated that gesture control is here to stay. The new Xbox is most likely to make use of Microsoft’s Kinect hardware. already Kinect has broken records in terms of sales of console accessories, but, veteran gamers should not be anxious, it is predicted that the 720 will also come with a traditional game pad. Eric Schmidt is gearing up for the first of what could be many Senate hearings on Google's alleged abuse of its  dominance in the Internet search business. the immediate and obvious comparison for Schmidt's appearance is the now legendary 1998 Microsoft hearing starring bill Gates, his sweaty brow and questions about the future of innovation in America. the hearings aren't expected to lead to new legislation but rather to inform the ongoing Federal Trade Commission investigation into Google, leaving many people to speculate about exactly what's at stake when Schmidt takes the stand this Wednesday. for Google, maintaining the status quo is the top priority.

Let's start with the consumer angle. Everyone expects Schmidt to face questions about Google ranking its own services higher than competitors in search results. the new York Times explains:

Today Google, like Microsoft then, is both admired and feared. Google has used the riches from its dominance in search and search advertising to expand into video distribution with YouTube, smartphone software with Android and Web browsers with Chrome. it has added online commerce offerings in local retail and restaurants, comparison shopping and travel, and folded them into its search engine, prompting complaints that Google is giving its businesses preferred placement in search results.

"If it is proven that Google discriminates in favor of its own online properties, you certainly have an antitrust issue," antitrust expert and law professor Herbert Hovenkamp told the Times. Google, however, strongly insists that this is not the case, that consumers can search wherever they want. "using Google is a choice," reads the company's official blog. "And there are lots of other choices available to you for getting information." 

indeed, consumers are choosing. As things are, Google's share of the search market is slipping. Yahoo and Microsoft teamed up last year and have managed to put a dent in Google's dominance. Meanwhile, there's a solid amount of speculation over whether the age of a search-dominated Internet might be over. Schmidt himself has admitted that social is the future–and that he "screwed up" Google's social strategy when he was CEO. Increasing scrutiny from the various government organizations is inevitably bad for Google's image, but should the FTC decide to lodge an official complaint with the Department of Justice, the U.S. government could hamper Google's growth further. 

If history is any guide, we can expect to wait a long time before the matter is completely resolved. in the end, the government did bring an antitrust suit against Microsoft, one that "weighed it down for years" to quote the Wall Street Journal. indeed the DOJ only finally closed their case on Microsoft this May of this year. Analysts are mixed on the extent to which the suit actually affected Microsoft's behavior, but one analyst told PC World at the end of the Microsoft case that this kind of scrutiny has a  "psychological" effect on companies, one that "changes their attitude and outlook and cramps their style." 

the historical resemblance of Google's hearing to Microsoft's raises the question of whether Google's era of absolute control might be nearing an end. Regardless of what Eric Schmidt says at the hearing–and a few people think he'll probably end up making a legendary Eric Schmidt gaffe or two–this week's hearing is a bad thing. "It's never a positive to have to testify on antitrust on the Hill," analyst Colin Gillis told Reuters. "the best-case scenario is that things continue as they are."
