A record 50 million tourists will have visited new York City by the end of 2011, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Tuesday, up about 1.5 million from last year despite a slowing global economy.
The big Apple is the most popular tourist destination in the United States, said tourism agency NYC & Company, which expects the city to have attracted 10.1 million international visitors and 40.1 million domestic visitors by the end of the year.
“new York City’s quality of life has contributed to this great success and we are confident we will sustain the success of our tourism industry in the months and years ahead,” Bloomberg said in a statement.
New York City is also on track to generate $32 billion in visitor spending and the tourism industry helps support about 320,000 jobs. The highest number of international tourists were from Britain with more one million visiting in 2011.
Since 2006 the number of new York City hotel rooms has increased by a quarter to 90,000. This year the city is set to have sold a record 27 million hotel room nights, up 4.5% from 2010.

Most NYC Restaurants Get An ‘A’ From The Health Department
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -Mayor Michael Bloomberg returned Monday to the Queens restaurant that received the city’s first-ever a grade last year to present them once again with the same honor.
Bloomberg ordered some scrambled eggs on burnt white toast for breakfast from Sparks Deli as he announced key findings about the first year of the city’s restaurant grading system.
WCBS 880′s Marla Diamond Inspects The News
Sixty-nine percent of restaurants inspected in the five boroughs over the past year have received As. So far, 90 percent of restaurants have been issued letter grades.
“I would much prefer to eat in a restaurant with an a. I think it says that the owners really care,” says Bloomberg.
Thirty percent of the restaurants in the city do not get A’s and that’s a source of indigestion for them, according to an industry spokesman.
“if we have to have a letter grade system, let’s have a , pass, you’re safe to serve the public. Or F, fail. We don’t need B’s and C’s that mislead the public, and really damage and shame restaurants,” Andrew Rigie, of the New York State Restaurant Association told CBS 2′s Tony Aiello.
The city health commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley says it’s still too early to gauge the effect of the letter grades on public health.
“We certainly hope that is going to be the case. That did happen in Los Angeles, a reduction in foodborne illnesses. But it’s too early to say here in New York,” Farley said. “every food establishment in New York City, from a corner deli to a five-star restaurant can have the best food safety practices if they train their staff and focus on food safety consistently.”
1010 WINS’ Stan Brooks reports: Making The Grade
Sparks Deli owner Tony Araujo says it’s not difficult.
“You don’t have to be scared of the board of health. The board of health gives you a lot of tools to help you,” he says.
Bloomberg says the grades have saved restaurants millions of dollars in fines.
“if you get an a and you still have some violations, because there’s always going to be some, we don’t fine you. And it’s a policy to encourage that have an a to keep an a,” says Bloomberg.
The letters are getting a big thumbs up from New Yorkers. Sixty-five percent in a recent survey say they base their restaurant choices solely on the grades.

New York poised to ban smoking in Central Park, Times Square
NEW YORK — The air in Central Park, the green refuge at the heart of Manhattan, is going to be even fresher under a new city law that will make it harder for the city’s smokers to find a place to puff away.
The new law, which bans smoking at city parks and beaches and was passed by the City Council on Wednesday, will make New York one of the best places in the world for nonsmokers or one of the toughest on smokers, depending on your point of view.
Ninety days after Mayor Michael Bloomberg signs the bill into law, smoking will also be illegal in such places as the pedestrian mall in Times Square and on the boardwalk and beach at Coney Island. Violators could be punished with $50 fines.
The city already bans smoking in bars and restaurants, a move that was followed by scores of other cities. and, smokers in the city pay the highest taxes in the nation – $5.85 a pack.
“New York City has been a leader on smoke-free issues and a lot of other cities will follow,” says Bronson Frick, associate director of Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights in Berkeley, Calif. “What happens in New York tends to spread around the world.”
The California Legislature passed a bill early in 2010 banning smoking at state parks and beaches, but it was vetoed last May by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
According to mr. Frick’s organization, a national advocacy group, there are already 478 towns and cities, plus the entire Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, that ban smoking in their parks. Smoking on beaches is also banned in Puerto Rico, Maine’s state parks, and in 102 municipalities, though many are small towns. New York will be the largest city to ban both.
“It is in line with making more livable communities and helping insure that these green spaces dedicated to active living be smoke free,” says Frick. The rationale for making the beaches smoke-free, he says, is to prevent pollution.
“There is a lot of research that the cigarette butts are highly toxic to aquatic creatures,” he says. “It is not just all about second-hand smoke.”
Tough laws’ impactNew York’s tough antismoking laws have had an effect, say nonsmoking advocates. Nationally, according to the Centers for Disease Control, 20.6 percent of adults and 19.5 percent of high school students say they smoked in 2009.
In New York, 15.8 percent of adults smoked in 2009 and only 8.4 percent of high school students.
“New York’s numbers are well below the national rates because New York has implemented a comprehensive and aggressive approach that includes high taxes and hard-hitting antismoking campaigns,” says Vince Willmore, a vice president at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids in Washington.
He notes that Mayor Bloomberg has been one of the leaders in the antismoking efforts. “The mayor is a tough guy,” he says.
Despite the city’s efforts, however, there are still 1 million smokers on the streets, according to the city’s Health Commissioner, Thomas Farley.
1 million smokers on city streetsOnce the city starts to implement its new rules, those smokers will find they are prohibited from smoking in 1,700 city parks and on 14 miles of beaches. The city has also included “pedestrian plazas,” areas located within the bed of a roadway that may contain benches, tables or other facilities for pedestrian use.
One of those is in the Times Square area. As he walked through the plaza smoking a cigarette Thursday, a man who identified himself as “Mordecai” said, “Mark me down as unhappy.” would he obey the rules once they go into effect? “Not likely,” he replied.
Only a few blocks away, in Bryant Park, where smoking will also be outlawed, “Ryan” was puffing on a cigarette on his way through the area. he says he would not break the law, but adds, “Do I think it’s fair? no.”
‘Smoke-in’ at park proposedAudrey Silk, who founded a group called NYC C.L.A.S.H. (Citizens Lobbying Against Smoker Harassment), says she won’t be surprised if smokers ignore the new prohibition. “This is outrageous and uncalled for,” she says.
Ms. Silk says she plans on organizing a “smoke-in” at City Hall Park on the effective date, which is likely to be sometime in May. “They have unleashed a monster, people are so angry and asking me to do this.”
Silk was equally indignant in 2003 when New York passed its restaurant and bar antismoking rules. She predicted it would result in fewer patrons and the laws would be overturned.
“Her predictions of the devastation of New York hospitality industry turned out not to be true,” says Frick who notes even Raleigh, N.C., long friendly to tobacco companies, on Tuesday made smoking in its parks illegal.

WNYC – News – City's Revised Budget Slashes Teaching Jobs, Spares …
NEW YORK, NY may 06, 2010—Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in his revised $62.9 billion budget released Thursday, says the city must slash nearly 11,000 jobs. Nearly half of the projected layoffs would be from the Department of Education; the executive budget for next year calls for a reduction of more than 6,000 teachers through layoffs and attrition. Bloomberg says absent some last minute reprieve from Albany, and quick action in Washington, the city has no choice. the mayor says the job cuts will affect every school in the system.
School’s Chancellor Joel Klein says layoff notices should go out after principals have drawn up their budgets.
“The latest we can get our budgets to the schools are in June. They’ll start to make decisions, and during the process in June we’ll have to identify the people who are being laid off,” Klein says.
Currently, which teachers are let go is entirely based on seniority rights.
Both Bloomberg and Klein want to keep the best teachers and let go of the ones they determine to be poorer performers.
The job reductions also include 400 firefighter positions. the police department will not be affected, though. the mayor has reversed his earlier proposal from January to reduce the police force by 892 officers. the reversal comes after a recent spike in crime, and the attempted car bombing in Times Square over the weekend.
Other cuts proposed in Bloomberg’s preliminary spending plan are still in the budget released Thursday and include closing some public swimming pools, eliminating 20 fire engine companies, raising parking rates in midtown Manhattan, and closing 50 senior centers.
The mayor says his updated budget assumes state aid will be cut by $1.3 billion, which is what was proposed in early state plans. he accuses the state of “starving” New York City. There is no state budget in place now — it is more than one month late.

NYC Mayor Postpones Tweeting To, You Know, Do His Actual Job
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg had planned to take the entire day tomorrow to use Twitter to send out mundane updates about his life. unfortunately, the Hudson River accident today has forced him to reschedule his Twitter plans, so he can, you know, actually do his job.
So those who were hoping to know what Bloomberg was eating for lunch, what he’s thinking about while walking his dogs, and updates about the Yankees game, will have to wait. why was Bloomberg planning to tweet for the day? well, because he’s running for re-election and undoubtedly heard about the power of social media in campaigns these days.
What’s kind of sad is Bloomberg’s actual Twitter stream. while it’s pretty clear that it’s not actually run by him right now (hence, the idea of him tweeting for the day actually being compelling), his tweet stream is filled with shameless self-promotion to follow him, and touting his day of tweeting. He #followfriday’d himself no less than two times yesterday.
Anyone looking at his tweet stream for information about the Hudson River accident? You’re out of luck. that might actually be useful.
Still, it was definitely a good call by the mayor to pass up the Twitter promotional stunt to deal with the tragedy.
