Top Three Weather Apps for the iPhone

With everyone being out and about, often times people find themselves checking out the weather on their mobile phones so they can properly plan their outdoor events. The iPhone has a plethora of applications to help you find out almost every detail you’re going to need to find what you’re going to wear for the day, and even go storm chasing if you would like These applications are almost always low cost (under ten dollars) or even free. however with so many of them its hard to find a really good application for your needs. here are my favorite weather applications in no particular order.

Radar Scope ($9)

Radar Scope is a great application from the folks at Base Velocity LLC. unlike other weather applications Radar Scope does not display image captures of Radar Data, it actually interprets the digital data directly from the official radars of the government’s National Weather Service.

The use of the digital data allows users to identify storm features easily. many storm spotters use this application when out chasing to find couplets in the radar’s velocity product. The Radar Scope application also integrates the standard gestures of the iPhone allowing users to pinch and stretch the map to zoom and drag the finger around to zoom. if you’re in an active storm area you can also see the location of active storm spotters on the radar as well as your position. The only drawback to this application is that it only works in the continental United States.

The Weather Channel (Free)

The Weather Channel is currently the top weather application in the iPhone marketplace and it’s also the most popular free iPhone 4 weather app. It features location based forecasts, severe weather alerts, radar and even traffic cameras The map is integrated with Google Maps and shows cloud cover, radar, temperature and even the Ultra Violet light index.

The main drawback of The Weather Channels iPhone application is the large advertisement on the top of the application which can be annoying at times.

iWeather

iWeather is a great weather application from the folks at NPC NV. It allows users to input a city in the input field and then press search. You will then be guided to a webpage showing a graphic representation of the weather over a Google Map type background of the city.

This application is not a classic iPhone application and can be accessed through the iPhone’s web browser by going to http://www.ilovewebapps.com/iweather/

Be Prepared For Your Day

With these top three weather applications you will be prepared for you day out and about. if your just traveling to work, going to classes or plan on a family day at the park these applications and weather applications like them are a must have for the iPhone.

Apple iPhone 5 Rumors Updated: October Launch, Revamped Unibody Case, Tweaked CPU and Other Features

    Like us on Facebook

As noted by Redmond Pie, the report in Maeil Business Newspaper also stated that the order for the next iPhone “has led Foxconn to begin a massive recruitment drive to ensure that enough hands are on deck in order to meet Apple's release schedule” in October.

While there is no official word on when the upcoming iteration of the Apple iPhone is finally arriving, chances of a fall launch look stronger than that of a summer launch.

    Strong iPhone 4S Sales

The iPhone 5 News Blog says that Apple would be inclined to pull the trigger on a June iPhone 5 release, had there been a decrease in the iPhone 4S sales, but there's hardly any sign of that so far. “In Apple's fiscal first quarter ending Dec. 31, 2011, the company reported iPhone sales of 37 million, an increase of 128% year-over-year, and the 4S was only released in some markets as recently as January.”

The site quoted a recent Gartner report, saying that “Apple had an exceptional fourth quarter, selling 35.5 million smartphones to end users, a 121.4 percent increase year on year.” the market research firm also predicted that “Apple's performance in the smartphone sector would continue through the first quarter of 2012 as availability of the iPhone 4S widened, although with residual pent-up demand pretty much fulfilled, iPhone 4S sales would no longer benefit from that factor as they had in Q4 2011, and its analysts projected sales declining somewhat quarter-on-quarter.”

Letting iPhone 4S Users Complete a Year in Carrier Contracts

Unlike a summer release, the fall release of the next iPhone would ensure that the owners of the current iPhone 4S have completed at least a year into their carrier contracts, according to iDownload Blog. It will “allow most of them to purchase a new iPhone at the subsidized price.” Releasing the new iPhone before the holidays would also help Apple record good sales.

    iOS 6 and WWDC 2012

iMore's Rene Ritchie, who claims to have “valuable sources from within Apple” under his reach predicted an October 2012 release for the next-gen iPhone in March. Ritchie is known for his solid track record with Apple-related news. In August 2011, he correctly predicted that Apple was going to release its then next iPhone in the first week of October and that the phone would be called “iPhone 4S,” not “iPhone 5.” In addition, Ritchie also foretold the new iPad's March 7 unveiling.

Regarding a new version iOS, accompanying the iPhone 5, Ritchie said that every new iPhone launch has seen the release of a new OS version next to it. While there has not been any exact information on how large an update Apple might be planning for iOS 6, “9 months doesn't sound like a lot of time for even a modest release.”

“If Apple announces an iOS 6 SDK event this spring, like they did from 2008 to 2010, then we may start getting an idea,” Ritchie said. “If iOS 6 isn't introduced to developers until WWDC, presumably in the summer like 2011, then a fall release would seem a certainty.”

Apple iPhone 5 Feature Rumors Updated

There was a flurry of iPhone-related rumors on Monday, ranging from the device's form factor and display to its internals including the processor and memory.

Revamped 'Sleek' Unibody and 4-inch Screen: The new rumor goes that the next Apple iPhone will sport a new form factor that “could employ a single unibody frame reminiscent of the company's MacBook lineup,” AppleInsider reported.

As noted by the report, Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White issued a note to investors Monday with details he said he picked up on a tour of suppliers in China and Taiwan. during the trip, he learned that “some suppliers will begin production in June of certain components of Apple's sixth-generation iPhone, setting up for a product launch in the fall.”

“In our view, this will be the most significant iPhone upgrade with a four-inch screen and a new, sleek look that we believe will require a Unibody case,” White wrote. “This new, sleek look will be the most important reason that consumers decide to upgrade.”

He also expected that the device would feature high-speed 4G LTE connectivity, just like the new iPad.

“Unibody designs are becoming the norm for Android handset makers, with HTC recently producing the impressive one X handset. Apple is expected to offer a similar unibody design, too, and that could prove to be the basis for another Jonny Ive classic, according to reports,” said Redmond Pie.

However, the prediction about a 4-inch screen contradicts with earlier reports. While some previous reports suggested that the phone would sport a large 4.6-inch screen, recent reports said that Apple would consider the current 3.5-inch screen size. Some other sources also said that the device would sport Quantum Dot LED curved glass edge-to-edge display with 1280 x 720 resolutions (367ppi).

Tweaked CPU and 1GB RAM: 9to5mac reported Monday that new models of the iPhone and iPod touch are already in the works.

“Apple has internally seeded a prototype next-generation iPhone with the iPhone 4 design. the actual next-generation iPhone is specifically said to not include the iPhone 4/4S design, but Apple is testing these new devices in older casings to throw off leaks,” said the report.

According to it, the iPhone prototypes had “a variation of the A5X's S5L8945X architecture” and like the new iPad, they were also “packing 1GB of RAM.”

“This prototype is labeled N96 internally, but we're not sure if this internal codename will carry over to the actual next-generation iPhone. again, this iPhone that we are describing is an internal-only unit built for testing the performance of a new chip in an iPhone, not an actual phone that Apple will produce,” the report added.

Jeff Benjamin of iDownloadBlog thinks that the variant in question is “probably not an 'A5X' per-se, but an entirely new processor dedicated to the device's smaller form factor, and less visually intensive needs.

Earlier reports suggested that the sixth generation iPhone would feature an A6 processor. It was expected to be a superfast 1.2 to 1.5 GHz processor with 1GB or more of RAM to offer amazing processing capabilities to the smartphone.

Other Rumored Features: As far as the ever-increasing rumor mill is concerned, other features that are likely to be added to the iPhone include an 8 megapixel (or even higher) camera with the ability to take pictures in the panorama mode, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera for video chatting, iOS 6, 4G LTE technology, near Field Communication (NFC) technology and much improved battery life.

As mentioned by White in his note, Apple's new iPhone launch in the latter half of this year is expected to be “extraordinary”. With a new look and updated features, White sees the next iPhone launch “dwarfing previous launches” and taking AAPL stock closer to Topeka's $1,001 price target.

      The Smartphone Era

The smartphone has changed the way we think and live. It is no surprise that market is flood with these incredible devices manufactured by different companies. also there are lot of applications available that makes these devices even smarter.

As the two major players in the smartphone markets Android and iPhone operating systems have plenty in offering. Android with its open source nature is more developer friendly than iPhone. IPhone on the other hand got features that originally set the trend for smart phones.

Whether you should go for iPhone or Android is a matter of personal choice, but the number of users for Android is on a steep rise. this is because various smartphone manufacturing companies use Android OS because of its open source nature on their devices. The fact that Google supports Android development works favorably for that OS.

A smartphone becomes really smart when the operating system is able to leverage the hardware features provided by the device. in fact the hardware is designed around the operating system, so this is not going to be a showstopper. with every new release of OS, there are new features, which make your smartphone to acquire more capabilities.

From a developer’s perspective, iPhone application development means learning Cocoa development environment and Objective C and you have to rely on a Mac OS machine for development. Android on the other hand being an open source, applications can be developed from a Linux or Windows machine and has support from Eclipse IDE support. If you know core java, then Android development is going to be very easy to follow. Both the application development follows of MVC or Model View Controller architecture.

Microsoft and Nokia Go All Out in Hawking Lumia

        By Shira Ovide

If partners Nokia Corp. and Microsoft Corp. don’t score a hit with their new smartphone, it won’t be for lack of trying.

ReutersNokia staff dance after the presentation of the new Lumia 900 during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Feb. 27.

The two companies, along with AT&T, are rolling out a series of marketing stunts to back the Lumia 900 handset, set to go on sale next week.

Today, Microsoft launched a new website teasing what looks like the company’s marketing strategy: Pitching the time-saving functions of the Lumia phone, which is powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone software.

On a bright blue background – similar in color to one version of the Lumia 900 – the website asks, “What would you do with a little more time in your day.”

Spotted in New York’s Central Park on Tuesday were people handing out chocolate bars pointing people to Microsoft’s “Free Time Machine” website. The hawkers in bright-blue jackets were back this morning in Times Square with chocolate treats, according to photos on Facebook and other places. Microsoft has declined to say how much it is spending on marketing for Windows Phone.

Meanwhile, bloggers fingered Nokia as the source for a website that includes mock hidden videos of a mobile rival–presumably Apple–acting haughty about consumers, and dismissing some of the well-trod criticisms of the iPhone. (You’re holding it wrong!) A Nokia spokeswoman confirmed the company is behind the website.

And AT&T already has said its promotional push behind the Lumia 900 will rival the telecom company’s marketing flurry for the original iPhone.

Nokia and Microsoft badly need a hit with the Lumia 900, the companies’ flagship phone in the U.S.

The Finnish company has linked its fate in the smartphone market pretty much entirely to Microsoft’s software. and while Microsoft’s 18-month-old Windows Phone operating system has won over many tech reviewers, Microsoft’s smartphone market share is just 3.9%, according to comScore data released this week. Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android operating system combined power about eight out of every 10 smartphones in this country, comScore reported.

The three partners’ marketing pitches will have to overcome some bumpy early reviews for the Lumia 900. The Journal’s Walt Mossberg said the Lumia 900 looks great and has zippy data speeds, but “still doesn’t measure up to rival smartphones” because of a flawed Web browser, underwhelming battery life and poor photo quality compared to rival mobile devices.

CNET gave the Lumia 900 four stars out of five and said it’s “perfect for the mainstream market” at a price of $99.99. The Verge said the Lumia 900 highlighted the problems with the Windows Phone software, and “it’s almost impossible to move beyond some of Windows Phone’s shortcomings this late in the game.”

Microsoft’s Greg Sullivan, senior product manager for Windows Phone, said the Lumia 900 reviews were overwhelmingly positive, and he said Microsoft is investigating one case where a reviewer ran into an issue with Lumia’s mobile Web browser.

FreeTimeMachine.comA Microsoft website teases the upcoming launch of the Lumia 900, an important new smartphone backed by Microsoft, Nokia and AT&T.

iTWire – Yellowfin releases iPhone app, “solves” smartphone approach to Mobile BI

          Thursday, 05 April 2012 07:55

Global Business Intelligence (BI) vendor, Yellowfin, has launched a new native application for the iPhone that, according to CEO Glen Rabie, “solves the issue” of receiving and sharing business analytics via smartphones.

The application, officially launched Tuesday 3 April, is available for free download from Apple’s App Store and compliments Yellowfin’s recently released (November 2011) application for the iPad.

Yellowfin for the iPhone integrates Yellowfin’s renowned ease-of-use and collaborative capabilities to deliver a Mobile BI application based on the intuitive, interactive and collaborative principles underpinning the world’s foremost social media platforms and applications.

Application development inspired by consumer platforms and technologies

Rabie said that Yellowfin’s consumer-oriented approach to Mobile BI challenged the industry’s perception of mobile analytics, and that the well-documented trend towards user-friendly enterprise products for analytics – the consumerization of BI and enterprise IT at large – proved a major driving force behind Yellowfin’s decision to undertake the project.

He also claimed that many enterprise applications and software products lack appeal, and have an enormous amount to learn from their leisure-time equivalents.

“Yellowfin’s new iPhone application solves the issue of experiencing Business Intelligence on smartphones,” said Rabie. “We’ve designed this application with consumers, rather than data analysts in mind – we’ve thought about how people like to use applications for popular social platforms, such as Facebook or Twitter, browse the Web and consume content. rather than concentrating on building a Business Intelligence application, first and foremost, we’ve built a fantastic user experience. why shouldn’t people find mobile analytics as intuitive and gratifying as StumblingUpon great insight, or Digging their favorite blog?”

Rabie said that Yellowfin had come a long way since its first iPhone application, which “didn’t provide users with a particularly engaging experience”, but suggested that many vendors hadn’t learnt the same lessons.

“I can’t understand why so many BI vendors still seem intent on condemning their users to such an underwhelming experience,” said Rabie. “People like sharing ideas and information via Google+ or Pinterest because it’s easy, fun and social. so naturally we’ve combined those same collaborative capabilities and user-oriented navigability to deliver a product that people will genuinely enjoy using.”

The new iPhone application reaffirms Yellowfin’s position as a preeminent provider of Mobile BI, rounding out an impressive 18 months for the vendor, in which Dresner Advisory Services (DAS) identified it as a leading solution in two separate studies analyzing and comparing the world’s foremost Mobile BI providers. Yellowfin was also recognized in Gartner’s latest annual Who’s Who in Mobile BI report.

          Features and functionality

Yellowfin’s new iPhone application includes all the ease-of-use and interactivity now synonymous with the vendor’s mobile offerings, and delivers a compelling mobile reporting and analytics experience by embracing the ‘gamification’ of enterprise IT.

Users can subscribe to and save ‘favorite’ reports, filter results, drill down and through data and set alerts. the new application also embraces Yellowfin’s author once, consumer anywhere approach – any reports created via the browser are immediately ready for mobile distribution. Customers gain the benefits of Mobile BI immediately.

A completely restyled User Interface (UI) offers enhanced navigability and takes advantage of the iPhone’s native functionality and multi-touch interface. Users can view all their dashboard tabs and favourites with a single swipe, and a drop-down inbox allows users to control all information delivery, access and dissemination from one central location. the new UI also makes knowledge sharing easier, allowing users to comment on and email reports with a few simple touches.

The ability to cache content to the iPhone enables super-fast report browsing and further embraces the notion of anywhere, anytime reporting. Data caching can be enabled or disabled depending on the security protocols of individual client organizations.

Enriched analytical capabilities include the introduction of series selection and section reports.

Yellowfin for the iPhone delivers on the promise of consumer-oriented BI

Rabie said that Yellowfin was responding to the consumerization of BI and the need for greater Return On Investment (ROI) for BI projects. the consumerization of BI – the introduction of user-friendly functionality and capabilities to support widespread BI adoption – has been noted by many analysts as the answer to improved BI ROI.

“Widespread user adoption – empowering as many relevant decision-makers as possible with reporting and analytics – is the best method for turning the insight generated by BI into action,” said Rabie. “That’s exactly what Yellowfin’s new iPhone app delivers.”

Rabie said that the need to design product functionality for data consumers, rather than report writers, was even more paramount in the context of mobile analytics.

“Organizations are beginning to realize the huge potential and benefits of widespread reporting and analytics – more people with access to understandable and actionable data means better decision-making and ROI for BI projects. the continued proliferation of Mobile BI is part of that trend.”

Rabie added that the focus on information consumption, rather than development, was further intensified when using smartphones as the delivery platform for Mobile BI.

“No one wants to conduct data analysis on a postage stamp – realistically, the screen size just doesn’t support content development. And that’s fine – Mobile BI is about empowering people with information; not report creation.” Yellowfin offers customers the ability to receive mobile analytics out-of-the-box on any device or platform at no additional cost, via native applications for the iPhone, iPad and Android platform or Web-browser.
