Microsoft’s SuperPhone Cometh – Should You Wait to Purchase the Best?
It appears that Microsoft is coming out with a smart phone. however, Microsoft doesn’t plan on calling it a smart phone, instead, it will be called; a SuperPhone. No, it won’t be a bird, or a plane, and it will most likely be nothing similar to anything which came before the smart phones that we are currently use to. Microsoft obviously intends to ratchet up the competition, and take smart phone technology to the next level.
In the personal finance section of Forbes there was an interesting article on December 30, 2011 titled; iPhone 5 to be Dethroned by Microsoft’s Superphone? by Louis Bedigian which stated;
The news of this still-unconfirmed iPhone 5 competitor first hit the Web when WMPoweruser, a Windows Phone tech site, uncovered a leaked Windows Phone roadmap that gives us a peek into the future. many sites have picked up on the story, hyping the so-called superphone as something that can go head-to-head with the iPhone 5.
Personally, I think that if Apple was really on the ball and really innovative rather than hiding behind their patents and charging everyone a premium price for their hardware, that they’d already have my holographic video phone by now. so, a little competition will be good for Apple, no truly innovative company should be allowed to sit on their laurels and take all the spoils for years on end. That’s just anti-Capitalistic, and capitalism made Apple great, so let’s see them compete without lawsuits, and anti-competitor media rhetoric coming from their religious-like brand loyalists.
You know, personally I am totally tired of what I believe in my opinion to be Apple Hype everywhere I look – I am one of many in the silent majority who doesn’t own an iPhone and will most likely will NOT purchase an Apple product. Trust me there are more folks that are NOT Apple loyalists than those who are, despite the prevailing media perception.
Next, I am personally sick and tired of Microsoft Bashers. It’s getting old folks. I’ve used Microsoft products all my life and have been quite pleased with them, they work fine, and their main products do enjoy mass appeal and the biggest share of the market. will this new superphone be one of those signature products – it could be, so all this Microsoft trashing we’ve been reading about the superphone which hasn’t even been released yet, looks like anti-Microsoft sour grapes, and quite frankly, I am sick of it. Just wait for the release and we’ll all see then.
Anyone who would count Microsoft out of the running in the cellular phone market, is making a huge mistake. The company has billions of dollars it can funnel into research and development, and it still has the lion’s share in the browser market, personal computer operating system, and word processing markets, and what about gaming with the Xbox? indeed, I wouldn’t count them out just yet. indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on.

10 iPhone 5 Improvements Apple Must Deliver
10 iPhone 5 Improvements Apple Must Deliver (Page 1 of 2 )
Apple’s iPhone 4S has so far proved to be a winner among consumers and enterprise users alike. the device comes with the 3.5-inch Retina display made popular in the iPhone 4, as well as an 8-megapixel camera, a dual-core processor and support for Siri, a voice activated virtual personal assistant that only further improves Apple’s chances of differentiating its latest smartphone.
That said, as with other Apple products, many folks are looking beyond the iPhone 4S to determine what the company might have planned for its follow-up, the iPhone 5. That device, which Apple has yet to even confirm exists, will likely deliver several improvements that will quite likely make the iPhone 4S look obsolete in comparison.
But just because it will have all new features doesn’t mean that the iPhone 5 will be a guaranteed success. for the iPhone 5 to continue Apple’s smartphone record of strong sales, the device must come with the features consumers and enterprise users are after.
Read on to find out what improvements the iPhone 5 needs to be a more worthwhile option for customers.
1. First and foremost: 4G
Apple is obviously feeling pressure from its 4G-equipped competitors. with the iPhone 4S, the company said users will be able to connect to the Web via 4G-like speeds over 3G networks. However, that’s only available to AT&T customers. All others will be able to access the Web only at 3G speeds. In the iPhone 5, Apple must put all those issues to rest and bring 4G to the device. It’s the smart move.
2. A bigger display
When Apple showed off the iPhone 4S earlier this year, it displayed a device featuring the same 3.5-inch screen found in previous versions of the smartphone. It was a disappointment, considering many Android-based handsets come with 4.3-inch displays. If Apple wants to stay competitive, it must bring a 4.3-inch screen to the iPhone 5.
3. An improved Siri
Siri is a fine addition to the iPhone ecosystem, but it falls short at times. when reciting an email, it sometimes misunderstands the user and includes wrong words. And when trying to find information about more sophisticated topics, it starts to break down. Siri is a fine first step in voice command from Apple, but many improvements must be made in the iPhone 5 to make it a must-have for smartphone buyers.
4. A revamped design
Prior to the launch of the iPhone 4S, there was hope that the device would come with a new design. but it features the same design as its predecessor, the iPhone 4. Apple can’t make that same mistake with the iPhone 5. If it wants to continue the unbroken string of successful iPhone introductions, an improved design is a necessity.

Tech Tuesday, 11-10-11
Our weekly round up of the big news in media technology and digital media.
iOS5 and iPhone 4s launch
After the iPhone 4S announcement last Tuesday, we took a look at the reaction in terms of the different types of people who were disappointed with the lack of “iPhone 5″, and those who were actually buying smartphones today. (It was interesting to see Apple announce a million pre-oprders within 24 hours (compared to the 600,000 in the same timeframe after the iPhone 4 announcement last year.)
Tomorrow will see the launch of the iPhone 4S itself, as well as the availability of iOS5 to download — which will bring a number of new features, not just to the iPhone 4S, but the iPad, iPhone 4 and 3GS as well. these include iCloud (and new iTunes features— with UK availability yet to be announced), message “notification centre”, iMessage (similar to BlackBerry’s BBM, but for the Apple platform), and a Reminders application (ie. to-do lists.)
Of particular note in terms of the impact on media behaviours;
- iPod application split into Music and Video — (perhaps hinting at broader plans for Apple in the Video area?)
- Newsstand — a similar application to iBooks, but with a focus on subscription-based media (ie. Newspapers and magazines.)
- Integration with Twitter (making it easier for app developers to integrate it with their apps)
- New web browser features; allowing users to bookmark pages to a “Reading List” to read later, with the bookmarks available in the Safari browser on the PC/Mac, and a “Reader” mode that strips ‘clutter’ from web pages for easy, undistracted reading.
The Reader mode should be of particular interest to advertisers; while the benefit to users is clear (particularly the ability to tie together articles that run across multiple pages into a single page), the benefit to publishers is less so (if their site design — and advertising — is swept aside.)
But the one group do stand to benefit from this are application developers. If iPhone and iPad users are less likely to see display advertising on websites, then in-app advertising (including Apple’s iAds) will become more appealing.
Steve Jobs
However, the latest Apple innovations were overshadowed by the news of Steve Jobs’ death last week. much of the technology world is still reeling from the news, and there are still scores of tributes and stories being shared. From the two companies he led (Apple and Pixar), to tributes from some of his fiercest competitors
Even Samsung and Google reportedly cancelled the launch of the latest Android handset, saying in a statement that “We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing.
As a driving force in the development of the modern computer, from the earliest days of the graphical user interface, through the smartphone and touchscreen explosion and early steps into voice control, his influence on the industry will undoubtedly be missed by many.
New iPad apps
A new ComScore report from the US says that web traffic from smartphones and tablets are now driving nearly 7% of all digital traffic — with iPads driving even more than iPhones. So the importance of these platforms is growing — not just in terms of mobile devices, but as alternatives to PCs.
“At long last” (as the new York times put it), Facebook have announced their iPad application; a free download, designed to create an “immersive and fun” experience.
TechCrunch reports that the a will also bring application discovery to the mobile platform — seeing a friend post a Words with Friends, tapping the link could open up the Words with Friends iPad application (if you had installed it already), or open it in the App Store (if you hadn’t.) The feature is also being added to the mobile version, with plans to do the same for Android applications (which TechCrunch says is in the works.)
Facebook and Apple are reported to have been caught up in negotiations for some time, following Apple’s launch last year of its “Ping” social network for music, which was planned to be integrated with Facebook.
The app, it turns out, had become the hostage of a tense negotiation between Facebook and Apple executives for a deal to further integrate Facebook into the next version of Apple’s operating system, iOS 5.
The latest wave of negotiations have presumably been around how in-app transactions would be dealt with; Apple insist on a 30% cut of in-app purchases, while Facebook are standardising around Facebook Credits as their platform’s currency — where Facebook take a 30% cut of every transaction. obviously, it would be tricky for both to take their cut of any transactions taking place within the Facebook iPad/iPhone application.
BusinessInsider.com reports that Apple appear to have won; while Facebook are bringing Facebook Credits and Applications to the mobile web, within the iOS App Facebook Credits will not be accepted.
On the publisher side, The Guardian is launching an iPad application of their own, priced at £9.99 a month (following a 3 month free trial, sponsored by Channel 4), with NMA.com reporting that is is expected to launch this week, with free access budled into print editions
The Guardian have put together a promotional video about their iPad application and its place within a broader shift to digital media. As editor Alan Rusbridger explains;
“We are not going to be scrambling to update it every minute or every hour— we will do that on the browser […] This is going to be a different kind of read, a bit more reflective.”
(A bit more like a newspaper then?)
The video goes on to talk about the column and grid-based design (again, a familiar concept…), and the way interactivity will add to the advertising opportunities. Worth a watch.
Independant putting up paywall
As expected, the Independent is to launch a paywall for non-UK readers, expected next week. Citing the pressure from the BBC, creating a need to make a distinction between UK and foreign visitors, the main target will be readers in the US and Canada.
Microsoft announce TV partners for Xbox
Announcing a major step in their ambitions to turn the Xbox 360 into a true media centre for the living room, Microsoft have announced a wide range of “entertainment leaders” who, through the Xbox 360 games console, will “transform TV.”
A key difference between Microsoft’s console and competitors from Nintendo and Sony is the lack of a web browser on the Xbox 360 — meaning that Microsoft effectively act as gatekeepers to online content on the console. So while the BBC iPlayer has been available for some time on the PlayStation 3 and Wii, negotiations around bringing it to the Xbox 360 have been held up by conflicts between the companies’ policies (Microsoft insisting that additional content be exclusive to Xbox Live! subscribers, while the BBC insists that access to BBC content be available to all.)
BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, LoveFilm and Blinkbox have all been announced as UK partners (but no ITV), while Sky TV has been available to those who subscribe to both Sky and Xbox Live! for some time.

Naked Women, A Death, And An iPhone 4G, Made News During The Week That Was
A possible new name for MobileMe could come around the same time as the next iPhone. But, stop calling the handset the iPhone 5! meanwhile, Amazon shows it wants to be considered Apple’s biggest competitor, as EA gobbles up not one, but two companies.
Plus, Hugh Hefner announces when Playboy arrives on the iPad, just as another chapter of Angry Birds is about to fly into the App Store. Finally, the gate has closed on the recent location tracking controversy as Apple releases iOS 4.3.3.
These stories and many more made news during the week that was.
Death Of ‘Locationgate’
Apple Releases iOS 4.3.3 To the World – Stops Your iDevice from Constantly Tracking You
Way ahead of the rumored release two weeks from now, Apple has just pushed out a new version of iOS to the world.
According to the update notes, iOS 4.3.3 (or 4.2.8 for Verizon iPhone owners) reduces the size of the widely publicized crowd-sourced location database that iOS devices maintained. This databas allowed anyone with access to your computer or iDevice to see everywhere you ever went. More precisely, your iOS device will now retain that information for a shorter period of time, or not at all if you disabled location services. Furthermore, this cache will no longer be saved to your computer when you back up your device.
Apple Corporate News
Apple: a $1 Trillion Dollar Company? (Video)
According to Formula Capital managing partner James Altucher, Apple could very well become the world’s first $1 trillion company. in fact, according to Altucher’s estimates, the Cupertino, California-based company could eventually be worth $2 to $3 trillion. This news comes from Business Insider, which highlighted Altucher’s appearance on Yahoo!’s The Daily Ticker.
Altucher’s optimism about Apple, which is currently worth $320 billion, is powered by two underlying realities. First, while Apple’s growth rate is astounding for a company of its size, its global market share in key markets is still extremely low. Meaning, there is a lot of room for continued growth.
Inside Apple: Fortune Sheds a Light on What It Takes To come Up with Your Favorite iDevices
Apple’s seemingly unstoppable success is the business equivalent of the philosopher’s stone. everyone wants to know what it is that makes the company tick or, rather what makes Steve Jobs… Steve Jobs.
As someone who spends a fair amount of time trying to answer that question, I can tell you right now that nobody really has the straight answer you’re looking for. Every now and then however, you can get a little glimpse into Apple’s world. There’s been Steve’s answer to the Flash debate, the D8 interviews, and many more. To celebrate Apple’s ascension into Fortune’s top 50, the publication put together a great feature available today in their iPad app on that very matter. What their writer Adam Lashinsky put together for his Inside Apple story is one of those rare and valuable insights.
Apple’s iThing Nomenclature and how It Relates Today
We take for granted that Apple’s products often have an “i” in front of them. where did this naming come from? What does the “i” actually mean? how does this naming influence Apple? Let’s take some time to tackle these questions.
Apple has had a little over 20 iThings in their hardware, software, and web service history. the iMac kicked off the iThing trend in may 1998. Steve Jobs offered the only explanation of what “i” means to Apple during this keynote. For Apple, “i” means internet, individual, instruct, inform, and inspire.
Future iDevices, iOS 5 News
AT&T Confirms iPhone 5 Delay, Or Did They?
AT&T has officially been told by Apple not to expect the iPhone 5 in June or July. This news, first reported by MacRumors, confirms what we’ve heard for months: the next-generation handset won’t debut until later in 2011.
Apparently, an AT&T customer received word that his eligibility date for a subsidized update had been pushed back by over five months. Concerned about the change, he contacted AT&T customer support and received this explanation:
Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July timeframe, though there will be a newer version in the future. unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us.
iOS 5 To Offer iPhone Owners “over the Air” Software Updates?
According to “multiple sources,” Apple is planning on offering “point updates” for iOS 5 “over the air,” provided the company can get carriers on board. Apparently, Apple has been discussing the launch of this new feature with Verizon Wireless since early this year. As of this moment, we’re not sure if the guys from Cupertino have given AT&T a call, too.
The feature would launch in iOS 5 – meaning the initial version of iOS 5 (iOS 5.0) would not be delivered wirelessly. however, the plan is that future software updates (iOS 5.0.1, etc.) could be delivered over the air – so long as Apple can get carriers to agree to pushing the data (which is a heavy 500+ megabytes) to iOS devices.
MobileMe Service To Become Castle?
Is MobileMe about to be reborn as Castle? According to the French site, Consomac.fr, Apple’s service could be rebranded with this moniker with OS X 10.7, Lion.
In the latest developer build of Mac OS X Lion is language that suggests MobileMe users will be asked to upgrade to something called Castle.
Of course, what Castle is or how it relates to Apple’s purported iCloud system, remains to be seen.
AT&T Marketing Strategy indicates Next-Gen iPhone Could Be Called “4G”

We are in such an era right now.
With the upcoming unveiling of the next-generation iPhone, speculation is running wild regarding the name to be bestown upon it. iPhone 4G? iPhone 4S? iPhone 4GS? iPhone 5? iPhone SomethingElseEntirely?

Is Electronic Arts Going To Suck Firemint Dry?
Ever since news of Electronic Arts’ Firemint acquisition broke earlier this week, the move has been both hailed and berated throughout the gaming community. such criticisms are premature, however, because the deal isn’t expected to close for another three to four weeks, and any financial details have yet to be divulged.
Many view the sale as a decided boon for Firemint, which is now poised to take advantage of the gaming giant’s vast resources in delivering new games befitting of the Australian brand’s storied pedigree. Rob Murray, CEO of Firemint, yesterday released a letter to reinforce this positive outlook. in addition to confirming that the development house will stay in-country, Murray enthusiastically emphasizes:
It is a good deal for us, because we need EA’s help in order to win. They can free us up a lot to focus on the creative stuff that really matters and they can provide essential resources to help us build better games. EA believe in us, they want us to make great games and they trust that we know how to do that. We will be joining ranks with some of the best developers in the business.
Is Chillingo Less Than Thrilled About EA Acquisition?
The makers of Cut the Rope, Chillingo, have been acquired by Electronic Arts inc. however, while the company seems thrilled to have been gobbled up by the giant game maker, an email sent to Chillingo Crystal members perhaps tells a different story.
Could it be that all is not rosy between Chillingo and EA just days after the two companies became one?
In news first uncovered by David Chartier of MacWorld, Chillingo Crystal customers are being asked to review EA’s Online Terms and Conditions. after doing so, customers are asked to select the ‘Delete my Account’ option, if they aren’t happy with the EA conditions.

The Daily was the first iOS app to support Apple’s recently introduced in app subscription policy, and can be subscribed to for $0.99 a week (following a trial period).
Get Paid for taking Pictures with Your iPhone

No, it’s not news photography or investigative reporting, and no, it doesn’t involve bonding with your inner paparazzi. But the money is real, and the idea… well, let’s just say it’s pretty original.
