Comcast Xfinity TV coming to Xbox 360
Jan 10 2012
At the Microsoft CES 2012 keynote, Microsoft has announced a content partnership with Comcast which will bring the Xfinity TV services to the Xbox 360 dashboard. Additional partnerships include Newscorp partnership which will bring Fox News, Wall street Journal, Fox and IGN content as well. not word on the exact time frame just yet but we’re sure it is only a matter of time when it goes live.
Microsoft told us not to expect a heck of a lot of news from its 2012 CES keynote, but it just took the wraps off of a couple of content partnerships. For one, we’re told that Comcast’s Xfinity TV will soon be coming to Xbox 360 (FiOS users are finally getting a little company, as it were), and moreover, there’s a new News Corporation partnership that’ll bring Fox News, Wall Street Journal, Fox and IGN to the aforesaid console. Craig Davidson, Director of Xbox, also threw a verbal high-five to U-Verse, Telus and Telefonica. no word on launch dates, unfortunately, but we’re guessing the parties involved will be making their own announcements on that.

Halloween Blu-ray Horror Palooza
With the best, most sacred holiday of them all happening this weekend, it’s no surprise that most of the studios have timed their most horrific Blu-ray releases to the last few weeks. and of course, IGN Blu-ray has been there to review them all. But since there’s nothing like curling up with a severed head, a Bloody Mary (the real kind) and a good horror Blu or two on Halloween, we figured we’d put together this handy guide to what’s out there at the moment. just click on a title to read our full review, and please… have a dreadful holiday this weekend!
ALIEN ANTHOLOGY One MU-TH-UR of a box set. Review Excerpt: The Alien Anthology box set is a dream. I can’t imagine a Blu-ray box set getting much better than this. We’ve got the set’s queen-sized extras (a good 30+ hours of bonus material). Honestly, there are so many here, there’s simply no way to cover them all in this review. Not only does each film host the original theatrical cut, but extended cuts as well. each disc features at least one commentary track (there are two for Alien), isolated 5.1 versions of the film scores for each film, deleted/extended scenes and Fox’s excellent MU-TH-UR mode, which keeps track of your progress through the set, and suggests supplemental options for you to explore…
FROZEN A ski lift, three co-eds and some blood walk into a bar… Review Excerpt: Frozen has more personality and tension than you’d expect from a horror movie about three co-eds stuck on a ski-lift. when the temperature drops and night settles in, the scares that happen are better than expected for low-budget inde horror. Hatchet writer-director Adam Green trades in his first film’s slasher movie scares for a more minimalist horror here, one that hinges on a premise that can’t quite sustain a feature-length running time…
SE7EN Se7en gets a nine. Review Excerpt: Despite some truly fantastic work throughout the ’90s and 2000s, Se7en still remains director David Fincher’s best film, albeit by a very narrow margin. dark, dreary and tense, the film is relentlessly freaky and absorbing right from the opening moments when a remix of Trent Reznor’s “Closer to God” is set to the opening credits (which eerily mirror the opening credits of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street)…
THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW This cross-dressing cult classic puts on its finest dress. Review Excerpt: For decades now The Rocky Horror Picture Show has dominated midnight screenings across the nation. and if you’ve never experienced one of these screenings, I highly recommend you check one out. People dress up as their favorite characters, sing along with the film, recite dialogue, play games, throw stuff at the screen, act out the movie – it’s really quite an event, one you will likely never forget…
MIRRORS 2 If you’ve seen one mirror gag, you’ve seen them all. Review Excerpt: In Mirrors 2 we follow a young, depressed man (Nick Stahl, Terminator 3) who’s still grieving over the death of his fiance. He takes a night security job at a department store (which doesn’t look like a department store in the slightest) owned by his father (William Katt). Soon, Stahl discovers that something evil is living in the mirrors. instead of just realizing that he’s seeing a reflection of the first film, Stahl’s character sets out to uncover the mystery behind the murderous mirrors. Cue gory deaths, insipid mirror gags, boring twists and weak dialogue. Yuck…
THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT Just buy a blank Blu-ray case, trim down the cover and keep your DVD. Review Excerpt: The Blair Witch Project has finally made it to Blu-ray. Why? I have no clue. The movie was shot using consumer-grade video cameras and scratchy 16MM film. The film segments look alright on Blu-ray, but the video sequences look just as awful as ever before. same goes for the film’s clumsy DTS-HD 2.0 stereo mix. this film never had any bells and whistles to exploit, so none are ported over to this Blu-ray…
GRINDHOUSE The Rodriguez/Tarantino double-feature back together again. Review Excerpt: I’m glad that Grindhouse can once again be experienced the way it was meant to be seen, with fresh extras no less. It’s a darn shame, though, that it took three long years to see it happen . Still, it’s fantastic that fans (and newcomers) can once again relive this unique experience. Extras, most of which are found on disc two of this two-disc set, are pretty impressive, enough to entice even those weary of double-dipping beyond the separate stand-alone Blu-ray releases of the two films. Not only are most of the extras from the previous Blu-ray special editions ported over (sans the extended cuts and scratch-free version of Planet Terror), but fans are treated to a fresh new array of supplemental features, including commentaries, extended trailers, more interviews, featurettes, BD-Live-exclusive features and more…

THQ's Farrell: Cloud Computing Could Bring Gaming 'Roaring Back'
Despite the game industry’s recent financial hit, THQ CEO Brian Farrell believes “gaming can come roaring back” with emerging technologies like cloud computing, as well as the opportunities in downloadable games and the brand extension potential offered by social gaming.
Cloud computing-based gaming, by which real-time graphics are rendered remotely and streamed to the player’s screen rather than generated locally by a PC or console, has not yet reached mainstream consumers, but competing firms like OnLive and Gakai are racing to get the technology into players’ homes.
“We like this idea of games in the cloud,” Farrell said in an IGN interview. “Why do consumers need to pay for that computing power [of a dedicated console]? If the consumer is comfortable with digital delivery, why doesn’t that concept work where we can deliver great games and lower hardware investment in a digital world? I like that world, frankly.”
Farrell acknowledged that such a world would still need to involve retail in some way, and noted that the major console hardware manufacturers may resist such a move, but he remains convinced that whatever the future may hold, the “traditional cycle of massive upgrades for graphics…is over.”
“If we can get the hardware away from the TV and in the cloud and then start delivering small- to medium-sized bites for the right price point, gaming can come roaring back,” he said.
He said THQ is also keeping a close eye on the “hyper-casual” world of Facebook — but not with the intention of giving up its core game business. rather, one of THQ’s plans is to use social games as brand extensions, bringing its intellectual property into the social world to broaden the company’s reach.
“It’s just a matter of keeping that gamer engaged with your brand in each of those environments,” he explained.
And THQ is already known to be increasing its focus on the downloadable game space. Earlier this month, the company said it would significantly scale down two studios and reorient them towards downloadable games, with Farrell more recently indicating Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC will be the main targeted platforms.
“There’s a lot of things to like about digital. Piracy can be more effectively dealt with. Used games, which has been a huge threat to the industry, you know. [If] you own it digitally, hopefully at a lower price point, everybody can win,” he said.
“We’re doing it obviously on Steam now with all of our PC games. If first parties allow that, we’ll certainly embrace that, because if that’s what gamers want, that’s who we’re going to serve.”
