Twitter CEO Comments on Wikipedia's SOPA-PIPA Blackout Plans
When asked if his company would go dark like Wikipedia on January 18 to protest SOPA and PIPA, Twitter CEO Costolo said on a tweet the idea would be silly.
"That's just silly. Closing a global business in reaction to single-issue national politics is foolish," Costolo said.
Some criticism of that short statement followed, but Costolo explained it a little better in a subsequent tweet.
"..point was relative to shutting down our real-time global platform to protest/inform US congressional debate on a topic."
He later said that Twitter was doing its part to fight against PIPA and SOPA, just not going dark.
Of course, when the UK media decided to write a story about it the headline was a bit more dramatic; for example, the Guardian’s headline was "Twitter boss slams Wikipedia's 'silly' Sopa protest."
Go figure. Wales announced yesterday that the U.S. Wikipedia site would go dark on January 18. part of that plan includes Wikipedia users contacting their representatives either through phone calls, emails, and every other imaginable way made possible for a free and open Internet.
