‘Chronicle,’ ‘Woman in Black’ Shatter Box Office Expectations on Friday

Updated 9:20 a.m. PT Feb. 4

"Chronicle" and "Woman in Black" are turning what was supposed to be a lackluster weekend at the box office into a battle for first place.

on Friday, the two new movies crushed their pre-release expectations.

Fox's "Chronicle" grossed an estimated $8.65 million while CBS Films' "Woman in Black" took an estimated $8.3 million.

Considering that Fox had expected high single-digits for the entire weekend — though outside box-office watchers figured about $15 million — and CBS was projecting $11 million for the whole weekend, opening day is beyond solid.

Both pictures are pretty much neck-and-neck for the no. 1 spot and on track to take in a touch more than $20 million each this weekend. The advantage still goes to "Chronicle" by a few hundred thousand dollars.

While Friday was great and Saturday is expected to remain robust, studios expect a major drop on Sunday, when all eyes will be on the Superbowl.

The other new movie at the box office this weekend is "big Miracle," from Universal. that picture took in an estimated $2.26 million on Friday and is tracking to gross just short of $8 million for the weekend — on par with expectations.

this is a weekend of low expectations at the box office.

Super Bowl weekend is about TV – not movies – and is traditionally one of the slowest box-office weekends of the year.

Super Bowl weekend 2011, for example, was the third-worst of the year. that weekend’s entire box office was $87.3 million – about half the opening weekend of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" alone. So studios have some cover if their movies don’t do especially well.

and how low are the expectations for this weekend’s three new releases?

Two PG-13 movies, Fox’s “Chronicle” and CBS Films’ “Woman in Black,” will fight it out for the no. 1 spot, while Universal’s “big Miracle” will be lucky to take fourth place, behind last weekend’s champion, “The Grey.”

The advantage for the top spot belongs to Fox, but the studio is downplaying expectations, projecting that the film, directed by Josh Trank, probably will take in something in the high single-digits.

less conservative box-office watchers outside Fox anticipate the movie, which cost about $12 million to make, could take in as much as $16 million, though the consensus is closer to $15 million.

The research firm NRG says there’s plenty of awareness about the movie: 52 percent of those polled told NRG they have heard of the movie. That’s an adequate number, but not nearly as good as the 68 percent “total awareness” score “The Woman in Black” received.

But 47 percent of men younger than 25 percent reported “definite” interest in seeing “Chronicle,” and 13 percent said it’s their first choice. among young women, 40 percent report “definite” interest in “Chronicle.”

The found footage movie stars three mostly unknown actors as high school friends who develop superpowers. But it’s a touch darker than the synopsis might suggest.

The critics like it well enough: Rotten Tomatoes gives it an 87 percent rating, Metacritic gives it a 71 and Movie Review Intelligence gives it a 74.8.

It’s a fairly low-budget project for Fox – “Chronicle” cost about $12 million to make – so it doesn’t need huge numbers to work for the studio.

one thing to count on: The 2,909 locations showing “Chronicle” won’t be terribly crowded during the Super Bowl. Friday and Saturday are that movie’s key days.

While “Chronicle” goes after young men, CBS’s “Woman in Black” is aiming for a young female audience.

The movie stars Daniel Radcliffe, the young actor who brought Harry Potter to life.

and it’s likely to perform perfectly well for CBS Films, which paid $3 million for U.S. distribution rights to the film.

an $8 million weekend will push the picture into the black for CBS, and the studio expects it will take in around $11 million. outside box-office watchers figure it will gross a few million more than that.

CBS Films has been promoting it on CBS and on the CW network, and Radcliffe has hyped it on “The Tonight Show,” “Ellen” and other television programs.

The movie is about a young lawyer who travels to a remote village where he encounters the ghost of a scornful woman.

It is getting reasonable reviews: Metacritic gives it a 60 percent, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 69 and Movie Review Intelligence gives it a 68.6.

and its total awareness is the best of any of this week’s new movies: 68 percent of those surveyed by NRG reported that they knew of the movie. among young women, the number is a remarkable 79 percent.

Additionally, 47 percent of young women report “definite” interest in seeing it and 16 percent say it’s their first choice.

Still, CBS expects a huge drop on Super Bowl Sunday.

The movie debuts at 2,885 locations.

Finally, there’s Universal’s “big Miracle,” a PG-rated family film that looks like “Dolphin Tales” with whales instead of dolphins.

It’s the only family film of the weekend – “Woman in Black” looks a little scary for the 13-and-under set and “Chronicle” is a touch dark and has high school kids being high school kids.

if parents want to push the kids out of the house for a few hours while they prepare for the Super Bowl, they could well push them to “big Miracle.”

Universal spent about $40 million to make the film, about a small town in Alaska that saves a family of gray whales from encroaching ice in the Arctic Circle — quite a departure from last week's "The Grey," about a group of oil drillers in Alaska who try to escape a pack of grey wolves.

Universal targeted mothers and girls, and notes that the movie’s tracking is similar to the films “Ramona and Beezus,” which opened to $7.8 million and to “Soul Surfer,” which opened to $11 million.

NRG’s tracking shows the movie lagging behind both “Chronicle” and “The Woman in Black,” and outside box-office watchers expect the movie to stay in the single-digits.

Its strongest demographic is women, and 60 percent of young women and 64 percent of those older than 25 report awareness of the movie.

Metacritic gives “big Miracle” a 60 percent rating. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 68 and Movie Review Intelligence gives it a 65.1.

“big Miracle,” which Ken Kwapis directed, stars John Krasinski. It opens at 2,128 locations.

While this weekend will be extra-slow at the box office, next weekend will be anything but slow.

“Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” “Safe House,” “Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace” and “The Vow” all open. and they’ll all open big.

Paramount announces animation division amid DreamWorks departure rumors

Paramount and DreamWorks Animation have had a successful relationship that includes films like ‘How To Train Your Dragon,’ but that may be in peril now.

    Credit: Paramount/DreamWorks Animation

Why in the world would Paramount want to start their own animation division? I’ve always had a deep love for animation as an art form, and when I moved to Los Angeles, many of the people I met and became friends with worked in animation.  very quickly, I learned that it can be one of the most punishing forms of filmmaking to work in.  that was the era of the giant Disney mega-blockbusters like "Beauty and the Beast" and "the Lion King," and every studio in town lost their minds trying to figure out how to get a piece of what they saw as a very easy pie. Let’s go ask Fox how they feel about that animation studio they built in Arizona for Don Bluth these days.  Let’s ask them if that was a good investment. Or maybe we can go ask Alan Horn if he feels like Warner Feature Animation was a good investment.  sure, we got "the Iron Giant" out of that deal, but we had to basically shame the studio into giving that a theatrical release because of how badly they got burned on "the Quest For Camelot." there are many reasons it is not easy to jump into the animation business, and I suspect Brad Grey and Paramount are about to start learning all of those lessons.  the first one that I look forward to him learning was laid out in the first paragraph of the press release they sent out today about the new division.  "Paramount Animation… will focus on high quality animation with budgets per picture of up to $100 million." Yeah, good luck with that.  Animation is an expensive business, and if you plan on competing theatrically, it’s more expensive, on the average, than live-action filmmaking, and putting a cap of $100 million on your films is a mistake right up front.  the first sentence of the second paragraph sums up why animation is a trap for executives and a nightmare for artists, though, and it has to do with that cost factor.  "Paramount Animation’s mandate will be the development of the broadest range of family CGI animated films…" Oh, there it is.  Family films.  So this isn’t really an animation division.  It’s a family film division. just like every other animation division or studio in Hollywood. It is depressing to see how the moment you discuss animation with money men, what they’re really hearing is "movies for children that will have toys you can sell and that you can cross-promote with McDonald’s," and nothing else.  I’m not surprised anymore.  Even Pixar, the most innovative animation company working in America, makes films for family audiences exclusively.  And Pixar’s films are not inexpensive by any means, just like the movies by DreamWorks Animation.  You’re talking about a million dollars a minute, minimum. the issue of DreamWorks Animation is an important one here, because for the last few years, they’ve been the supplier of animated fare to Paramount, which has served as the distributor for films like "Kung-Fu Panda," "Megamind," and "how To Train Your Dragon."  the two "Shrek" sequels that Paramount released were monster hits, earning about a billion and a half dollars for just those two films.  this is, by any definition, a successful relationship, but Jeffrey Katzenberg is a very demanding partner, and there have been rumbles now for years that the relationship with Paramount is an uneasy one. The story at Deadline today suggests that Warner Bros. might end up stepping in to partner with DreamWorks Animation if they do leave Paramount at the end of the year, and that surprises me.  Then again, none of the top guys at Warner were there when they tried this before.  the difference, of course, is that DreamWorks Animation is up and running and has a track record and an infrastructure already in place, so this isn’t a case of Warner starting to make these films.  They’d just step in to release them.  After losing Marvel to Disney, I’m not sure Paramount can afford to give up DreamWorks Animation.  this is a major piece of their financial year every year, and they can’t just start making their own animated films and expect that things will work out exactly the same. the end of the press release today mentioned the success of "Rango" worldwide, and carefully describes it as the company’s "first fully owned CGI animated property."  that is true, but they didn’t actually make the film.  ILM was the animation house, and the film was developed by Gore Verbinski and the ILM team.  whatever Paramount Animation will or won’t be, "Rango" is not an example of what we can expect.  if Paramount announced they were signing a deal with ILM to distribute film they produce, that might interest me. But Paramount Animation?  So far, it’s nothing but a name with no track record, no talent announced, and if industry history is any indication of what we can expect from the fledgling studio, it’s going to be an educational few years for the company.  A very expensive education, at that, and only time will tell if they’ll end up telling any stories we actually care about.

Protestant Christians in Europe: Why is the Vatican still being represented as Christian leaders?

I'm a Protestant Christian in America and I've been hearing a lot of news on Fox lately about the Vatican, and I'm lost for words why people in Europe are still listening to the Vatican's contradictory statements. for all ye' Catholics and Atheists do you mind not responding to this answer if ye' is going bash Protestantism or Christianity in general for that matter?

because Italy, france, spain and portugal are still known as "catholic countries". it is even impossible to get the morning after pill over there and abortion is frowned upon. everyone is entitled to their own religion and in italy it is the catholics that dominate their faith, although there are more protestants in rome these days. the writer percy shelly's ashes are laid to rest in the protestant cemetry in rome. if you ever go you will see how many churches there are! millions and most catholic. its just their country and beliefs so it is important to them.

Protestant Christians in Europe: Why is the Vatican still being represented as Christian leaders?>>

The Vatican is the Head of the Catholic Church, and Catholics are Christians.

      <<I'm a Protestant <snip> Vatican's contradictory statements.>>

Fisrt of all, a lot of people in Europe are Catholic.
Second, statements from the Vatican – PROPERLY UNDERSTOOD – are NOT contradictory.

      <<for all ye' <snip> for that matter?>>

I do mind, because you don't seem to be practicing any restraint yourself in alleging that the Vatican statements are "contradictory"?

What a fascinating mentality you have. . . you claim Vatican statemetns "contradictory" but didn't provide any examples of contradictory statements! Logic suggests that you failed to do this because you were either unable or unwilling to do so. It makes no sense for you to be unwilling, so I have no choice but to presume that you are UNABLE to provide evidence of contradictory statements.

This begs the question – why make the accusation to begin with when you can't prove it?

You have no documentation of Vatican contradictory statements, and are essentially bashing the Vatican (and it should be obvious to anyone with two functioning neurons that the media is out to get the Catholic Church) but don't want to be bashed in return?

Document your assertions so us Catholics can give intelligent answers and stop being such an anti-Catholic bigot.

Just because you do not accept the Papal office as your spiritual guide (leader), doesn't mean that others don't either. I'm not a Catholic, and I see major political blunders in what has transpired over the course of history, but not one person is perfect, except Jesus Christ.

That said, and though I do not agree with many of the teachings and practices of Roman Catholicism, I will not ignore their influence on Europe or the world.

Finally, who is anyone (but God) to judge whether another group is Christian or not?

The Pope is a spiritual leader, not a political one. Europe would be a much better place if people paid a little more attention to him.
Europe is going down the drain. Greece in flames; riots in France because people don't want to work to the ripe old age of 62 (gasp!), Ireland is bankrupt, with Portugal, Spain and Italy not far behind.

St. Peter to whom Christ gave the Keys to the Kingdom was mrtryed and buried at the Vatican that is the seat of true Christianity. Protestantism is false christianity tailored to the whims of different individuals along history

Notice how the name-calling flies in your face, as soon as you point out that the "pope" and "vatican" are not Christian?

They have to call you names. they sure can't use the Bible to defend their beliefs.

If you don't want people to bash Protestantism or Christianty, then maybe you shouldn't ask a question bashing Catholicism and Christianity. Just saying.

I'M IN USA BUT THERE ARE no perfect humans…so do not judge others…
