Just from looking around, everyone can tell that smartphones are more popular than ever before. but it’s still impressive to consider the numbers – according to Nielsen, more than half of all U.S. mobile subscribers opted for a smartphone, up from 44 percent a year ago, and the trend continues to grow.
Less obviously, smartphone owners are each downloading more apps compared with a year ago. Nielsen reports that 88 percent of smartphone owners have downloaded an app in the past 30 days. the average device now has 41 apps, a 28 percent jump from the 32 app average of a year ago.
Those additional downloads have added diversity to how much time people spend with any particular app. last year the top 50 apps accounted for 74 percent of usage time, but the plethora of choices has led to the top 50 losing some of those minutes to where they now claim just 58 percent.
Even so, the five most popular apps remain unchanged: Facebook, YouTube, Android Market, Google Search and Gmail. the overall popularity of the Android Market app is interesting, since it’s irrelevant to iPhone users.
Furthermore, smartphone owners spend a mere 2 minutes more on apps each day than in 2011, up to 39 minutes in 2012.
Those who realize that this information affects their business should remember that Digital Media Wire is producing the first annual Mobile & Social Entertainment Summit at DMCE on June 29, as part of CE Week in new York City.

Facebook acquires Instagram. did you think it was big news when Instagram finally came out for Android systems last week? it was for many a smartphone user — but even that large news pales in comparison to the fact that Facebook, the biggest kid on the tech block, has just agreed to purchase the company behind that favored photo app for $1 billion. From Facebook CEO mark Zuckerberg’s own Facebook status update:”I’m excited to share the news that we’ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook. For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.we believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook. That’s why we’re committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.we think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. we plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.these and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. we will try to learn from Instagram’s experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook’s strong engineering team and infrastructure. This is an important milestone for Facebook because it’s the first time we’ve ever acquired a product and company with so many users. we don’t plan on doing many more of these, if any at all. But providing the best photo sharing experience is one reason why so many people love Facebook and we knew it would be worth bringing these two companies together. We’re looking forward to working with the Instagram team and to all of the great new experiences we’re going to be able to build together.”

Apple iPhone 5 with 4G LTE to Launch Later in 2012; Other Features You Can Bet On

If the DigiTimes report does turn out to be true, then it is expected that the growing popularity of the new iPhone will lead to other smartphone manufacturers equipping their new devices with LTE functionality, which is likely to boost up global sales of LTE-enabled smartphones in 2012.
According to the DigiTimes report, world-wide sales of LTE-enabled smartphones are expected to increase from the originally projected 25-30 million units to 45-50 million units.
The unnamed sources, cited by DigiTimes, also said that the new iPad can only support LTE networks in North America as networks in other regions adopt different frequency bands.
“Currently, 700MHz and 2,100MHz are used in North America, 800MHz and 2,600MHz in Western Europe, the Middle East and Africa, 800MHz, 1,800MHz, 2,300MHz and 2,600MHz in Eastern Europe, and 1,800MHz and 2,100MHz in Asia Pacific,” the report said.
“The frequency bands adopted for LTE networks around the world in 2015 will have 38 combinations, with 700MHz to have the largest proportion at 16 percent, 2,100MHz to have 13 percent, 2,600MHz 11percent and 2,500MHz 10percent, the sources cited Wireless Intelligence under the GSMA as indicating.”
Though there was no clear reason for the delayed release of iPhone 4S, many analysts believe that it was Apple's failed attempt at implementing LTE into the phone that held back the much-awaited launch. Since the new iPad got 4G LTE support, there is an even higher chance that LTE may be incorporated in Apple's next iPhone as well.
What are the Other Features that Look Certain in iPhone 5?
The Internet is full of speculations about what the new iPhone will possibly bring. various reports have listed out a number of features, which they believe would give Apple's brand new gadget a significant edge over its rivals.
Given that the new iPad sports Retina Display with a ground breaking 2048 x 1536 resolution, the upcoming iPhone is highly rumored to feature something higher in terms of its display. If the existing rumors turn out to be true, the next generation iPhone will boast a 3.7- to 4-inch Quantum Dot LED curved glass edge-to-edge display. Some of the recent reports even suggested that a high resolution (1280×720) HD screen with a pixel density of 367ppi is also on the cards.
Denying all the rumors of an A6 processor, the new iPad finally got powered by an A5X dual-core CPU with quad-core GPU. that said, rumors are rife that an A6 processor will eventually power the next iPhone. it will be a superfast 1.2 to 1.5 GHz processor with 1GB or more of RAM to offer amazing processing capabilities to the smartphone.
What about the camera? well, considering Android smartphones are increasingly coming with 8 megapixel camera, iPhone 5 is also expected to feature something similar or even higher. Another rumor indicated that iPhone 5 will even have a 3D camera.
Many reports have also been betting on the Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to be included in the upcoming Apple phone. The New York Times reported even before the launch of iPhone 4S that a forthcoming iPhone would feature NFC. Since it did not turn out to be iPhone 4S, it could well be the one on the cards.
After upgrading to the new iOS 5.1, many users have reported a much-improved battery life on their devices.
“Currently at Usage 7 Hours, 46 minutes, Standby 3 Days, 20 Hours.. with 17% left in the battery.. Was at 100% when I did the 5.1 update,” said a user, who shared his experience via a thread on reddit.
Considering this, the next iPhone is also likely to offer a much-improved battery life. It's expected that the iPhone 5 will have better battery life than the Li-Po 1420 mAh battery in the iPhone 4S that gives up to 8 hours of talk time on 3G and up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM).
If the latest rumors are to be believed, the iPhone maker may abandon mid-year launches and consider a 12-month iPhone upgrade cycle starting in the fall.

iPhone Tops J.D. Power’s Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Survey

Furthermore, the report also revealed that customer satisfaction regarding battery efficiency varies between owners of 3G- and 4G-enabled devices. the difference can be partly explained by the “substantial battery life” 4G-enabled devices use up in searching signals. Another explanation was that owners of 4G devices use them more for emailing, talking, Web surfing and such, compared with owners of 3G devices. according to the survey, only 25 percent of 4G smartphone owners reported they were “highly satisfied” with the battery life of their device and would “definitely” purchase another device from the same brand. Meanwhile, two out of 10 smartphone owners experienced software or device malfunctions.
J.D. Power and Associates released two new reports – the 2012 U.S. Wireless Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study and U.S. Wireless Traditional Mobile Phone Satisfaction Study – both of which measured customer satisfaction with devices used less than a year. the iPhone was the only smartphone to receive a five Power Circle Rating from the research firm, after the two reports.
Key Factors in Determining Customer Satisfaction
Both studies used several key factors to determine customer satisfaction: With traditional handsets, the factors are performance – 31 percent, ease of operation – 24 percent, physical design – 24 percent and features – 20 percent. for smartphones, the factors are performance – 35 percent, ease of operation – 24 percent, features – 21 percent and physical design – 20 percent.
