Schools Improve Writing with Innovative Technology and New Content

Charlottesville, Virginia – Schools have been searching for new ways to improve student writing skills, and, with mobile technology and interactive software, students are now actively engaged in learning writing and critical thinking. Niles Technology Group’s line of essay writing apps are perfect examples of how schools are getting students to write more, to write better and to communicate with strong arguments. Designed for the iPad and iPhone, Niles apps are changing the way students’ write.

“the untold story about the recent reports of the lowest reading scores ever on the SAT is that the scores for the writing section are even lower. Students may be dropping in reading skills, but in writing, they are not even on map,” explains Michael A. Niles, president of Niles Technology Group. “Schools are clearly tasked with a lot to do and have to take choices on what is possible. Writing, unfortunately, has taken a hit in terms of curriculum emphasis. yet, writing is the one skill that colleges and employers mention as most lacking. Niles Technology apps, such as Middle School Writing 1.0 and Essay Workstation 2.0, take the pressure off of schools and teaches the appropriate writing genres, all at one affordable price.”

Students, today, live on their mobile devices, and it is imperative that schools interact with students where they intellectually “live and breathe.” Making students use antiquated materials and computers forces them to abandon what they are most comfortable with for a more mundane, less capable, less challenging academic environment. the results are reduced attention span and lower information retention. Niles Technology apps changes this unproductive dynamic and gives students, teachers and schools the potential to excel in written communication.

“In the development phase of the apps, it was obvious that a new type of writing instruction was needed. Students indicated that they struggled, not with sentences, but with deciding on what and how to write,” continues mr. Niles. “interestingly enough, providing examples of how and what to write only led to mimicry, and students still complained they were lost about how to develop their own ideas. with this information in hand, Niles Technology created proprietary, step-by-step writing guidelines that have proved effective with both students and teachers. with the apps, students are no longer lost and become active thinkers throughout the entire writing process. Additionally, schools benefit by raising the writing skills of their students.”

Examples of what users say about the apps are:

“this app seems to be amazing. So many different types. Ohio State isn’t getting easier, so this is coming in handy.” By Andydew (iTunes Review) about Essay Writing Workstation

“Hands down the best writing help I have seen. the app answers every question it seems and is more like an encyclopedia than a handbook. I have spent more $$$ in bookstores and never got this much. Expensive app but worth every penny.” By J. Parks (iTunes Review) about Essay Czar eTextbook

“I bought Middle School Writing about a month ago [for my son] and liked it very much. I found the writing steps very explicit and useful.” By F. L., College Writing Professor, California (via email) about Middle School Writing

Schools and teachers have discovered the efficacy of Niles Technology apps. Each month the volume purchase of the apps increase, which indicates that the use of mobile apps in schools is becoming more commonplace. Parents have also caught on because Essay Workstation is the No. 1 gifted app in the Niles inventory. for the lower grades, Middle School Writing has become a solid No. 2 bestseller, with both parents and schools purchasing the app. the Niles app catalog can be seen in the App Store by simply entering “Niles” in the iTunes search

Smartphone sales to top 100 mn in Asia-Pacific: analyst

SINGAPORE (AFP) – Sales of smartphones such as Apple's iPhone4 are set to top 100 million units for the first time this year in the Asia Pacific market — excluding Japan, an industry analyst said Thursday.

Smartphone sales are projected to hit 137 million units in 2011, up from nearly 84 million last year, the technology industry research company IDC said in a statement.

"Smartphones were a hot item in 2010, with more than double the shipments of 2009," said IDC analyst Melissa Chau, adding that the growth came from the region's more developed markets such as South Korea.

"In 2011, IDC expects this fire to keep burning as mobile phone vendors race to get consumers on higher-margin devices, operators look to pull up revenues on mobile data, and mobile platform stakeholders battle to woo app developers," Chau said.

'Apps' refers to 'applications' that allow smartphone users to do a range of activities through their mobile phones including sharing pictures, playing games or checking their bank accounts.

In addition to operating as a telephone, smartphones allow users to send and receive emails, access Facebook and Twitter accounts, download movies, music and books and perform multiple other functions while on the go.

In the face of the smartphones onslaught, feature phones — or devices that perform the basic functions — still held their ground.

Sales of feature phones grew 17 percent in 2010, driven by low-end brands priced below $100 from China, India and other countries, IDC said.

What is the actual definition of a smartphone?

i'm so confused about it i want to be able to tell if a phone is a smartphone while phone shopping without asking people for every single phone lol….thanks!

Though the definition of a "smartphone" is an evolving thing, a smartphone is typically described as a device known as a personal pocket computer with mobile phone capabilities. It's qualities include running an operating system that allows the installation of applications by the user and continued development of apps by the development community.

The real world street definition today would probably be a phone that allows the installation of apps, true internet browsing capapbility and pc-like capabilities.

the actual definition of a "smartphone" is any phone that also has either a calendar, internet browser, or other non phone related function. in the 90's a smartphone simply had a calculator feature my first one was in 1992 and had a built in tip claculator was advertised as a "smartphone".

So pretty much any phone you buy today can be classified as a "smartphone" I've found outside of blackberry, iphone and android very few really are that smart though. lol

cell phones these days fall in classifications you have a smart phone which is close to a mini computer or pda that you can talk on you have feature phones that have alot of features but are not quite as equipped as the smartphones with running the software they run then you still have your basic phones for people that just want to keep it simple so the choice is so wide range now but basically your smartphone is gonna run a certain software that acts as a mini computer. and you usuallly have to purchase a data plan to cover it.

        One capable of running applications.
