How Android Phones Became a Hit

Android has officially hit the big time now that sales of its devices exceeded the Apple iPhone over the past quarter.

The definitive Android smartphone guide

Android’s rise is fairly remarkable for an operating system that only just launched in the fall of 2007. The open-source operating system’s success is even more impressive when you consider that when it debuted it was already facing a crowded field of OS heavyweights such as the iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Symbian.

Briefly, a look at the numbers: over the span of a mere quarter last year, Android saw its share of the U.S. smartphone market more than double, as the platform was used on more than 7% of all U.S. smartphones at the end of 2009. The most recent research released by the NPD Group showed that Android-based phones in the first quarter of 2010 accounted for 28% of all smartphone shipments, trailing only Research in Motion’s BlackBerry operating system, which accounted for 36% of all smartphone shipments in the quarter. and finally, Android-based phones are now available on all four major U.S. wireless carriers, with the million-selling Motorola Droid so far serving as the platform’s flagship device.

So how did this all come together so quickly? looking back over the past three years, it seems that Google had a very simple but effective plan to push its way into a crowded market. using a combination of free software, design simplicity and brand clout, Google has succeeded in making an operating system that, in just a couple of years, has grown to rival the most popular mobile platforms in the business. Let’s take a look at each element piece by piece:

* First, make it free. One of the most enticing aspects of Android from both a software developer and a device manufacturer perspective is that it’s completely free to use, as Google charges no licensing fees for anyone who wants to base their device or application on Android. This is a distinctly different path than the ones taken by Apple and Research in Motion, which both only allow use of their operating systems on their own devices, and by Microsoft, which only allows devices to use Windows Mobile through a licensing agreement.

* Second, keep it simple. When Google went about attracting application developers to its new platform, it made a big deal about the Android software development kit’s ease of use. and since Android is Linux platform that uses Java as its programming language, most software developers on the market haven’t had much difficulty in writing programs for the operating system.

Google has also gone out of its way to make posting a new application on the Android Market a snap, as the company does not screen any applications sent to the store and will only remove applications if it has received legitimate customer complaints about them.

“We created an account, uploaded our apps and then hit submit,” said Ilya Eliashevsky, the product manager for app developer DataViz’s Android product line, last year. “Then the app just started showing up on devices and we saw sales immediately starting to roll in.”

* Finally, be Google. there have been ambitious platform developers in the past who have tried to mainstream open source in the mobile OS market, but none of them so far have had the market clout of Google. Google’s brand recognition not only helps it attract media attention to its initiatives but also helps it more quickly develop relationships with device manufacturers, carriers and app developers. In other words, while you obviously need to develop a strong mobile platform that device manufacturers, software developers and consumers want to use, it doesn’t hurt to be the world’s No.1 search engine either.

Smartphone, mobile laptop users won’t have many traffic tie-ups on new networks

MONTREAL – Traffic tie-ups aren’t a big problem on this highway and speed isn’t an issue.

Canada’s smartphone customers, including Apple iPhone users, are having a pretty good ride on new advanced, wireless networks as they surf the Internet and download software apps.

That’s because there isn’t always a lot of network traffic to compete with when they get up and running.

“It’s like building a 10-lane highway, even though there’s only enough traffic out there currently to justify having a three-lane highway,” said technology analyst Carmi Levy.

“You would always rather be ahead of the game than behind,” he said.

Bell and Telus launched next-generation wireless networks last fall, aimed at smartphones and mobile laptop use, and have been offering the iPhone like competitor Rogers.

In industry jargon, it’s called an HSPA-plus network, part of a common global standard, and it stands for High Speed Packet Access.

That would ideally mean experiencing close to the speed of home Internet service on your mobile phone, speed needed for data-intensive activities rather than just for talking.

But the mobile phones available up to this point haven’t yet caught up to the network’s full capacity.

“The network comes first and then the devices follow,” said Levy, an independent analyst in London, Ont.

Not only does the wireless carrier have to invest in a lineup of devices for such a network, it also has to migrate customers onto the network who already have existing cellphone contracts waiting to expire.

It will take “fully three years” for Bell and Telus to gradually move their subscribers to the new network from existing ones, Levy said. the two telecoms also operate older networks with different technology that’s considered less relevant globally.

Telus executive David Neale said its advanced network isn’t busy yet.

“In relative terms, the network is still what you would consider pretty much empty,” said Neale, chief futurist and senior vice-president of strategic content services.

“(But) people are being added all of the time.”

PC Magazine analyst Sascha Segan said, for the first time, Canadian carriers are all competing with the same network technology.

“Canadian carriers are out of the mobile phone ghetto,” said Segan, managing editor of mobile at PCMag Digital Network in New York.

“I wouldn’t say you are out front,” Segan said. “But you are in the pack of technologically competitive countries.”

Segan noted that Canadian carriers will have to compete on monthly service plans and customer service.

“All the Canadian carriers now have access to the hundreds of phones that are being developed for the global standard. that means better phones for everybody.”

Telus says it has 14 devices, including two USB sticks for mobile laptop use, for its HSPA-plus network.

Neale wouldn’t say how many customers are on the new network but said “just shy of six million customers” are on Telus’s older wireless network. Telus has 6.5 million wireless subscribers.

Bell Mobility wouldn’t say how much traffic is on its new network.

“But it’s a brand new network, so we’re just getting started,” said spokesman Mark Langton.

Langton said the new network contributed to the quarterly record 523,000 new activations in its recent fourth quarter. Bell says it has 16 devices for the new network.

Rogers operates three networks, two of them advanced including an HSPA-plus network.

“While information pertaining to the network traffic split is confidential, for data, most traffic is carried on HSPA or higher,” said spokeswoman Ashleigh Blackmore.

Wind Mobile, operating since December, also has almost no traffic on its network, said CEO Ken Cambell. Wind is planning to upgrade its advanced network to HSPA-plus.

“Your speed and your function are a product of how many people are on the network,” said Campbell.

New cellphone player Mobilicity and Quebec-based Videotron are also planning to build advanced networks for their cellphone businesses.

Levy said there are consumers who will never be interested in upgrading from a basic cellphone.

“I think there will always be a certain segment that will hold onto yesterday’s technology until it’s pried out of their cold, dead hands.”

Medical Smartphones [part of HCPLive]: Review of the QuantiaMD …

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to review the QuantiaMD smartphone app for Android. I’ve used QuantiaMD on the Apple iPhone and iPod touch, so I’m quite familiar with this innovative medical app. QuantiaMD also has a smartphone app for the BlackBerry, but they don’t currently have an app for Windows Mobile (but you can access QuantiaMD using your mobile web browser).

The QuantiaMD interface on Android is very similar to that found on the iPhone. the main difference is that there’s a small gray bar that sits on the bottom of your screen. Slide that bar up and you’ll get access to the main navigation menu. here, you can access clinical activities, educational content, communities, and much more. You’ll even find a case challenge involving H1N1.

After you log in as a validated member, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in the Monthly Medical Challenge. It’s a great way to test your knowledge of medical trivia and earn some Q-Points. I spent most of my time in the Expert Practice Series where you can learn about clinical topics or non-clinical topics such as “coding for revenue,” or “understanding and complying with HIPAA.” I also enjoyed earning “Q-Points” through activities like the Expert Practice Series. You’ll see a multimedia presentation of a clinical case that also includes some embedded multiple choice questions. I love the clinical photos. some of these are creative market research activities and you can earn Q-Points that can lead to Amazon credit. Here’s a brief explanation of Q-Points:

The QuantiaMD smartphone app also allows you to interact with a clinician-only community when you click on the “Question & Consult” section of the app. you can also go to the “community” section and access short clinical cases and other presentations that are relevant to your specialty. once you start exploring QuantiaMD on your smartphone, you’ll quickly realize that the app is unlike any other medical smartphone app. the interface is unique, the content is engaging, and you have the opportunity to interact with other physicians. It’s a portal to a host of medical presentations, clinical cases, and an online physician community. before you realize it, you’ll be collecting Q-Points and you may end up with an Amazon gift card.

So, here’s a summary of some of the key features you’ll find on QuantiaMD:

Expert Presentations

  • Leading physicians deliver multimedia presentations on the most critical clinical and performance issues in medicine. Interact and debate with peers and download and collect completion certificates.

Earn and Redeem Q-Points

  • Be rewarded for contributing your valuable time by completing surveys, finishing the monthly clinical challenge, and referring colleagues. Q-Points are redeemable for Amazon.com gift cards.

Compete Nationally

  • Compete for national ranking in our exciting monthly medical challenge, as well as specialty challenges.

Free CME

  • QuantiaMD brings you outstanding CME from partners in an interactive and concise format you can’t find anywhere else.

100% Clinician

  • Each member’s identity is verified. you can be sure that only other clinicians are commenting, posting a question, or contributing presentations

Go to quantiamd.com from your smartphone’s browser and follow the download instructions.
