Snowmobiling in New York: What You Need to Know

Planning a trip to New York this winter and want to fit in some snowmobiling while you are there? I can tell you from personal experience that there are a multitude of wonderful trails to choose from.

Here's a quick overview on what you need to know before you visit and a few trails that you may want to consider:

What You Need to know before Visiting

Before you head out with your snowmobile in New York State, you'll have to register it with the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. this has to be done even if it is already registered with your home state. You can apply online for a 15-day registration. It'll cost you $100, but the registration will be effective immediately. once you've printed out your registration confirmation, you'll need to carry it with you along with proof of valid insurance. a helmet is also required, so don't get caught without one!

You might also want to visit the N.Y. Snowmobiler website. it contains contact information for all the snowmobile clubs in the area, as well as a down-loadable guide. Most snowmobile trails in N.Y. are maintained by the clubs, so it's best to make contact with the club's officers in advance of your trip to verify current trail conditions.
