Really Good Smoked Barbecue – A Review of Piggy’s Restaurant

Piggy’s Bar BQ serves up some great smoked barbecue ribs. If you are in the mood for some killer smoked barbecue in the St. Louis area, and you happen to be driving along Interstate 70 in O’Fallon, Missouri, hit the Highway K & M exit and head one block North to Piggy’s Bar BQ. you will not be disappointed if you are a fan of authentic smoked barbecue. here you’ll find smoked pork, beef brisket, chicken and of course, pork ribs.

Piggy’s has all the charm of the typical barbecue joint. If you’re looking for fancy, this is not it. Glass storefront windows with special slab barbecue rib pricing painted across in neon letters, let the barbecue aficionado know this is the real deal, not some fine dining experience.

The real indicator that you’re going to get real wood smoked meat at Piggy’s is the large smoker cooking away out front, and the 8 foot high stack of wood piled right next to the smoker. Just driving by the location is enough to make the mouth water, and that alone attracts numerous customers to the place.

The Smoked Pork Steak Combo dinner can be had for about $9.00 and includes a decent size smoked pork steak, a soft drink and two sides, chosen from the following list:

  • Red skin potato salad
  • Cole Slaw
  • Baked beans
  • Macaroni & Cheese
  • Special house recipe green beans
  • Corn on the cob

The pork steak was smoky and so tender, it could be cut with a fork. Adding the hot & spicy sauce really gave the meat a pleasant tangy kick. the potato salad and slaw were good, not spectacular. Face it, barbecue is about the meat, not the side dishes.

Other menu items include Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket, Chicken, Brats and Ribs. all meats are smoked in the big wood smoker out front. Piggy’s will serve their meats either as sandwiches, Combo meals, or meats by the pound. Try the Piggy’s sampler platter which includes 2 BBQ rib bones, choice of 2 meats, and 2 side items, all for around $11.00

Like most barbecue joints, don’t expect fancy service either. Be prepared to order at the counter, get your own soda, and take your tray to your choice of table or booth, and get down to some eating. Piggy’s serves their meat un-sauced, with a choice of three Piggy’s own sauces provided at the tables. Piggy’s original sauces are Special Recipe, Hot and Saucy, and Kansas City Style. A nice touch to assure the diner that they are in a true to life barbeque joint is the roll of paper towels placed at each table for the diners convenience.

Piggy’s Bar BQ’s summer hours are Monday through Saturday, 11:00AM to 9:00PM, Sunday 11:00AM to 8:00PM. Piggy’s is located at 327 S. Main Street, O’Fallon, Missouri. Piggy’s has been voted best BarBQ in NE Region by Rural MO Magazine, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Stop by and check them out and judge for yourself how they stack up against other local BBQ joints.
