Renowned Texas shooting instructors Leon and Frillie Measures are offering open registration for his next visit to the Coastal Bend. Leon and his wife, Frillie, have scheduled classes for Aug. 3-5; Sept. 7-9. if classes fill, they will consider scheduling weekday dates. if there is enough interest, Frillie will offer a ladies-only class on Saturday mornings. The Corpus Christi Law Enforcement Fishing Tournament is scheduled for Aug. 3-4 at Marker 37 Marina under the JFK Causeway. this is a fundraiser to benefit local youth and crime prevention programs. Padre Island National Seashore has scheduled a variety of park activities for adults and children through Labor Day. in addition, the public is invited to observe sea turtle hatchling releases, which are not scheduled far in advance, through August. Releases are scheduled for 6:30 a.m., usually at the Malaquite Visitors Center and no park entry fee is required. Walks last 45-60 minutes to observe native plants and animals. Friday beach walks include a family activity that includes collecting critters in the surf. Deck Talks: 1 p.m. daily through Labor Day. Bring a lunch and join a ranger in the shade of the visitors center. Topics vary. 30-45 minutes. Junior Ranger Program: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge has scheduled free activities for kids and parents from 1-2 p.m. each Thursday through Aug. 9. These Refuge Explorer programs offer a different theme each week. The Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve’s Bay Education Center is offering interactive activities in Rockport and Port Aransas through its Estuary Explorer programs, which allow families to explore local estuary and coastal environments. Program topics include habitats, plants, crustaceans, mollusks and more. Cost is $4 per person. Classes are limited to the first 24 visitors. Reservations are encouraged. Valero’s Corpus Christi refinery has scheduled its annual dove hunt to benefit the Corpus Christi Police Athletic League’s at-risk youth programs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Lonesome Dove Ranch. the event will feature a hunt, skeet and trap shoot, raffles, door prizes, and food and drink. The Southeastern Wildlife Conservation Group is recruiting local tarpon anglers to help with tarpon research and conservation studies in cooperation with the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. Volunteer opportunities include the Tarpon Genetics Recapture Study, juvenile tarpon habitat identification, data collection and tagging. Registration is under way for the Coastal Conservation Association’s Babes on Baffin and Blue Ladies Fishing Tournament scheduled for Oct. 6 at Roberts Point Park in Port Aransas. the registration deadline is Sept. 21; Sept. 1 if you want to secure your preferred shirt size. the pretournament Friday night social will be at Doc’s Restaurant under the JFK Causeway. the tournament features a live weigh-in format that includes a donation to the CCA/AEP Marine Development Center kid-fish ponds. Entry fee is $80 per angler or $65 for little Babes. Fee includes Saturday dinner catered by Castaways, a long sleeve tournament shirt, visor, gift bag, and a CCA membership.
