Ottawa – Why the Capital is One of the Best Places to Take an English Course in Canada

When it comes to picking a city in which to take an English course in Canada, the country’s underrated capital, Ottawa, often loses out to better known tourist destinations like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

But Ottawa’s got plenty going for it: from some of the city’s major historical sites to fantastically varied shopping, nightlife, and great access to a variety of outdoor pursuits. What’s more, as one of the fastest growing cities in North America, it comes with a buzz that’s all its own.

Well Connected

Ottawa is a real transport hub, with direct flights and other superb transport links all over Canada. From the point of view of a student traveler doing an English course in Canada, this means that the rest of the country is considerably more accessible than from many other towns and cities.

And the city’s transport system itself is excellent, as well. A combination of buses and a light rail system provide a cheap and efficient way of getting around in Ottawa. Better still, though, the compact area of downtown Ottawa could hardly be any more accessible by foot or on a bicycle.

Things to See and do in Ottawa

Ottawa’s transport system may make life easier for a student who’s chosen the city for their English course in Canada, but it’s ultimately just a practicality. the real reason for picking the city is the variety of things to see and do when classes finish.

The first stop for most tourists in the Canadian capital is the country’s political hub: Parliament Hill. A grand, nouveau-Gothic complex at the heart of the city looking out over the Ottawa River, it’s the home of Canada’s House of Commons and the Senate.

The country’s capital is also, understandably enough, a center of culture. Ottawa museums and galleries are uniformly excellent, and the Museum of Civilization, the Science and Technology Museum and the National Gallery of Canada, especially, should not be missed.

Shopping and Nightlife in Ottawa

As you’d expect from a bustling metropolis, there are any number of shopping opportunities in Ottawa. Whether you’re one of the city’s well-to-do fashionistas, or a student on a strict budget, for example, there’s something for every purse at Westboro Village.

And when the shops close, there are more than enough opportunities to show off your new threads after dark, for Ottawa nightlife is bouncing. one of the best places to head for on a night out in Ottawa is the Byward Market area where bars rub shoulders with reasonable places to pick up a bite to eat.

An Active City

Like most cities in Canada, Ottawa is a great place for people who like to be active and spend time outdoors. Just over the river from the city is the fabulous Gatineau Park, which is, without a doubt, one of Ottawa’s very finest assets.

Here, there are any number of trails that are perfect for jogging, cycling or taking a leisurely stroll. Although the park is a wonderfully scenic spot all year round, during the autumn (fall), the riot of colors from the trees has to be seen to be believed.

As autumn turns into winter, ice skating, obviously, becomes a pretty popular pastime, and one of the very best things to do in Ottawa is rent a set of ice skates and skate along the Rideau Canal.

Whizzing along on the ice surrounded by the most striking of wintry scenes, it would be hard to disagree with the fact that there are few better places to do an English course in Canada than the country’s underrated capital.
