"We have lost 13000 jobs in the past year." as Pearl Kamer told those leaders, unemployment last year was worse than during the 1990s when Long Island lost most of its defense industry. Then more bad news: IRX Therapeutics, a company growing here at Farmingdale’s bioscience incubator, has been lured away to Florida. these setbacks came as the Long Island Regional Economic Council was completing its strategic plan, backing 13 projects to compete for $40 million in state benefits. Favored projects include the Heartland project in Islip, and efforts to redevelop Ronkonkoma as a transit hub for Islip MacArthur Airport. Recently, Bill Taubman sought council support to build a major shopping mall at Syosset, saying his prolonged zoning battle with Oyster Bay is costing jobs and taxes. "What could be more important than jobs and taxes at this time?" he asked. to its credit, the council now backs Taubman’s project. It is also targeting Amneal Pharmaceuticals in Hauppauge for expansion, creating 400 new jobs. but what of companies thinking of leaving? Arrow says they intend to keep 500 <b>…</b>
