Memorial Day events honor the defenders of freedom

The Egg Harbor Township Memorial Day parade and ceremony was held on Monday, may 28 along Ocean Heights Avenue, concluding at the Veterans Memorial.

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – “This is the best turnout to date,” Councilman Paul Hodson told the crowd gathered at the Egg Harbor Township Memorial Day parade and ceremony held Monday, may 28 along Ocean Heights Avenue.

The parade featured a variety of community groups and organizations, including 4-H club members on horseback, the Egg Harbor Township Police Athletic League Ready-to-Ride participants driving ATVs, and the high school’s crew team, with members proudly displaying their trophies while they rode on the truck that totes their boats.

Local officials gathered at the township’s Veterans’ Memorial to speak and lay a ceremonial wreath.

State Sen. Jim Whelan said that rather than a day of parties, Memorial Day should be a day of “commemoration and thanks for us to honor those who gave the last full measure of devotion so that we can exercise freedom and liberty.”

Assemblyman Chris Brown, an Army veteran of Persian Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom, quoted Father Dennis Edward O’Brien, a sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps.

“It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag,” he quoted.

Veteran Joe Hasselberger, who served in the Navy’s amphibious forces during the Korean War, said he is pleased the township holds a Memorial Day ceremony each year.

“This is what should be done to honor the dead and celebrate the living,” he said.

Bobbie Angello, left, waits for the parade to start with her husband, Tom Angello, and her sister Lorraine Peculski.
