Made-in-Spore PlayStation games

PLAYSTATION enthusiasts may be able to download made-in-Singapore games for the popular Sony console within a year.

On Tuesday, four local start-up companies announced that they had set up shop at Nanyang Polytechnic’s (NYP) $4 million Games Resource Centre to create games for the Sony PlayStation 3. They are the first Singapore companies to do so for the popular platform.

Spokesmen for the companies, XYZ Wave, Red Hare Studios, Redeye Studio, and Gamma Games, said they are expecting to release their products – ranging from action games to family-friendly titles for casual gamers – on the PlayStation Network online service.

Mr Daniel Tan, the director of NYP’s School of Interactive and Digital Media, said game companies here have historically found it hard to obtain the Japanese gaming giant’s closely-guarded games creation software, which is needed to make games for its PlayStation consoles.

Hence, the majority of PlayStation titles continue to come from large, established Japanese and American game companies.

‘It would be rather hard (for the four start-ups) to obtain it on their own without a track record,’ he said.
