Lady Gaga Receives Thirteen MTV VMA Nominations

Suite101 explores into the upcoming MTV VMA award categories, where pop music sensation Lady Gaga scores the most nominations in the show’s history

At this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), pop music sensation Lady Gaga receives thirteen nominations, incidentally the most nominations in the award show’s twenty-six year history. The 2010 MTV VMAs will take place on September 12th 2010 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California. Grammy-Award winning rapper Eminem follows closely behind with eight nominations. The winners of the VMAs receive a "moonman" as an accolade.

Lady Gaga Breaks MTV VMA Records

In addition to having the most nominations, Lady Gaga happens to be the first female artist in the show’s history to have two videos in the coveted "Video of the Year" category where she is nominated for her hit "bad Romance," as well as for "Telephone," her collaborative video with Beyonce.

Lady Gaga used her Twitter page as a medium for expressing her gratitude to her fans , dubbed as little monsters, towards these multiple nominations. According to Lady Gaga’s Twitter page, on August 3rd 2010, she remarked: "13 VMA noms lilmonsters. Breakin records+breakin rules. I love you, you bad Kids are a part of me. PAWS UP!"

Female Video of The Year

Lady Gaga received two nominations in the "Female Video of the Year," category one for "bad Romance," and another for "Video Phone," yet another collaboration with Beyonce. Joining Gaga and Beyonce is pop princess Katy Perry for her "California Gurls" video which became a summer anthem in the West Coast, as well as Kesha for "Tik Tok," a song which spent nine weeks at the top of the Billboard Charts, preventing Lady Gaga’s "bad Romance" in reaching the top of the charts. Lady Gaga’s "bad Romance" peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for many weeks in a row.

In addition, country sensation Taylor Swift, last year’s winner of the "Female Video of the Year" award for "You Belong with Me," also received one nomination this year in the same category for "fifteen."

Best Collaboration Video

Lady Gaga once again is vying against herself in the "best Collaboration" video category where she is nominated twice for "Telephone," and "Video Phone," both of which she collaborated with Beyonce. other nominees in the collaboration category include B.o.B. and Hayley Williams for "Airplanes," Jay-Z and Alicia Keys for "Empire State of Mind," as well as 3OH!3 and Kesha for "my first Kiss."

Most Award Wins in History

The video for Lady Gaga’s "bad Romance" is tied as the most nominated video in VMA history with ten nominations, a record which is shared by British musician Peter Gabriel’s 1987 video for "Sledgehammer." At the 1987 MTV VMA awards, Gabriel walked away with nine moonmen for the aforementioned video, a record which stands until today, and the record that Lady Gaga has to beat in order to be declared the winner of the most MTV VMA awards in a single night.

However, the most wins for a single artist is MTV VMA awards in history is none other than pop queen Madonna, Lady Gaga’s idol, with twenty wins, followed by Peter Gabriel’s thirteen wins. although Lady Gaga was nominated nine times in the 2009 MTV VMAs, she only walked award with the "best New Artist" award, meanwhile her video for "Paparazzi" won two awards in the artistic categories for "best Art Direction" and "best Special Effects." Gaga has a lot of catching up to do, in an effort to come anywhere near close to her musical hero, Madonna’s, record.
