Ken Levine: New Console Generations Would Be “Bad For Everybody” [Famed BioShock Designer Says That Nobody Needs PlayStation 4, Xbox 720 – Says That Next-Gen Games Would Cost $100 Right Now] » TFTS – Technology, Gadgets & Curiosities

Ken Levine – the famed designer who has worked on such titles as Thief, System Shock 2, BioShock and BioShock Infinite – usually has no qualms about voicing his opinion. This time, he’s sounded off on the possibility of a new video game console generation emerging sometime soon. Levine says that if the console holders were to introduce new systems now, it would just be bad for everybody.

Levine’s objection to new consoles seems to be the fact that development costs for this generation (Xbox 360, PS3) are still high. the jump to the next generation would cost a fortune. Levine said (on the Irrational Games podcast):

At this point I have no desire as a developer and zero desire as a gamer to see the next generation come out where I’m sitting right now.It still costs us a fortune to make games on this platform. if they’re going to up the scale, up the art, up the content, I don’t know how to make that and sell it to anybody for under $100 a game. Who wants to do that? It’s bad for everybody.

With the recession, the recent introduction of Kinect and Move and other factors – I think this just about as unlikely as could be, but I know from comments left on our site that a lot of you are interested in the next Xbox and PlayStation.

Levine’s comments are just the latest in this consensus from the video game industry. Eurogamer reports that THQ’s Danny Bilson told them that now is not the time for new consoles. Microsoft and Sony reps have long held to their same old line of “We’re on a 10-year lifecycle with this generation.” they always say something like that every generation, though. what is giving credence to that this time around is the fact that the worldwide recession has killed consumer spending worldwide and that these consoles (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) are much more versatile than their predecessors and their predecessors’ predecessors. Seeing things like video on demand services and whatever patched into these consoles long after launch gives me hope that they can maybe last until 2015 and 2016.
