Desean Jackson Benched For Sunday's Eagles-Cardinals Game

All-pro NFL wide receiver Desean Jackson was benched prior to Sunday's 1:00 p.m. Eagles-Cardinals game. The reason, an Eagles source confirms, was Jackson's failure to attend a Saturday morning special teams meeting.

according to ESPN, Jackson's non-attendance, which sources attribute to an unset alarm clock, wasn't the first of its kind. As an Eagles official told The associated Press, Saturday's truancy, combined with the wide receiver's surly attitude, was simply “the final straw.”

Jackson's spokesman Bobby Mcrae called the benching “unjust.”

“DeSean missed a meeting and he should be punished for that," McRae told ESPN's Sal Palantonio. "But we think this punishment is totally unjustified. he should be there with his teammates. this is all part of an ongoing contract dispute with the Eagles."

Jackson is in the final year of his four-year rookie contract, making $600,000 — the rookie minimum. Displeased with his pay, the two-time Pro Bowler staged a hold-out during the first 10 days of training camp. On returning to the team, Jackson pledged to put football first and let the contract issues take care of themselves; subsequent poor play, however, has media and football fans speculating that Jackson's contract remains a lingering source of dissatisfaction — a notion Jackson disputes.
