COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Siena Heights men fall to Lourdes; SHU women beat Grey Wolves

The Siena Heights University men’s basketball team couldn’t have asked for a better start Wednesday night.

The Saints would’ve preferred a better finish.

after building up a double-digit first half lead, the Saints were unable to keep their momentum in the second half in a 79-66 loss to the Lourdes University Grey Wolves in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference game at the Siena Heights Fieldhouse.

Siena Heights (6-17, 3-8 WHAC) dropped its third straight game. It appeared that the Saints were on their way to a win in the first half, as they shot 57 percent from the floor (16-of-28) en route to building a 41-27 halftime lead. Siena Heights closed the half on an 18-6 run.

Lourdes (13-10, 7-5 WHAC) turned the game in its favor in the second half, outscoring the Saints 52-25. The Grey Wolves scored the game’s final 12 points to take the victory.

Nick Kosovich scored 17 points and handed out five assists to lead Siena Heights. Cecil Clark added 13 points, while Vince Schantz scored 11 points. Eric Cogan had nine points and Chris Lemm had eight points and seven rebounds. Rick Jones handed out three assists.

The Saints will host No. 3-ranked Davenport University in a WHAC game Saturday afternoon.

WOMEN Siena Heights 83, Lourdes 59: At Sylvania, Ohio, the visiting Saints rolled past Lourdes in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference game Wednesday.

Three of the Saints scored double digits on the night. Samantha Wolford led the offensive attack with 14 points, while Raina Chambers and Amanda Duke each scored 13. She’Mieka Nicholson finished with nine points and five rebounds.

Siena Heights led 44-29 at halftime and outscored Lourdes 39-30 in the second half.

The Saints improve to 15-8 overall and 7-4 in the WHAC.

Alma 63, Adrian 43: At Adrian, the Bulldogs were handed a fourth straight loss Wednesday as they fell to the Alma College Scots in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.

Adrian (6-10, 3-7 MIAA) had three players score in double figures, but went through long scoring droughts throughout the game. a jumper by LaQwana Dockery lifted the Bulldogs into a 21-21 tie with just over five minutes left in the first half, but Mallory Pruett answered with a layup to put Alma (5-14, 3-7 MIAA) back in front. The Scots built a 34-26 lead by halftime, then held Adrian to 20 points in the second half to take the win.

Alma swept the two-game regular season series from the Bulldogs, also recording a victory Nov. 30, 2011.

Dockery and Senneca Scott both had 10 points and nine rebounds to lead Adrian. Katie Ross also scored 10 points, while Jasmine Byers recorded six blocks.

The Bulldogs travel to Albion for a MIAA game Saturday. Adrian lost to the Britons 47-37 in the teams’ first meeting Dec. 14.
