Apple dominates other smartphone vendors in consumer satisfaction
The latest American Customer Satisfaction Index has found, not surprisingly, that people really like their iPhones.
The latest ACSI, which is published quarterly by the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and rates a wide range of big-name tech vendors on a 100-point scale, shows that Apple is simply outclassing its competition in the mobile phone market, as its score of 83 bests its nearest competitor by eight points. Apple’s closest competitors on the latest ACSI are HTC, LG and Nokia, all of whom scored 75 on the latest index.
Troubled BlackBerry maker Research in Motion had the lowest score among mobile phone manufacturers on this year’s ACSI, as its 69 rating trailed Apple’s score by a whopping 14 points. ACSI founder Claes Fornell says that RIM’s low ratings shouldn’t be surprising to anyone who’s been following the news surrounding the company for the past year.

“Companies with weak customer satisfaction often have weak stock performance,” Fornell says. “RIM’s sales are slumping amid a bevy of problems, from hardware and software issues to server lapses that have caused email and messaging outages. over the past year, share price for RIM has virtually collapsed.”
The latest ACSI has also found that Sprint is tops among major American wireless carriers in overall customer satisfaction, although this may be a somewhat dubious honor since most U.S. wireless carriers have seen their satisfaction score fall over the past year. according to the ACSI, Sprint is leading the pack with a satisfaction score of 71, followed closely by Verizon at 70, and AT&T and T-Mobile, which both scored 69 on the survey. AT&T was the only major wireless carrier to see its ratings increase year-over-year as its 69 score represented a 4.5% increase from the 66 score it recorded in 2011. What’s more, it seems that subscribers at small carriers were significantly more satisfied than subscribers at the big four, as all other wireless carriers had an aggregate score of 76 on this year’s survey.
And finally, Verizon’s FiOS fiber optic service led all subscription television services in the latest ACSI in customer satisfaction with a score of 72. FiOS was the only subscription TV service to top 70 on the latest index and was trailed by the DISH Network, which had a score of 69, and by AT&T’s U-Verse and DirecTV, which each had scores of 68. Charter Communications had the lowest customer satisfaction score among subscription TV services at 59, while Comcast had the second-lowest score at 61.
Overall, the ACSI creates customer satisfaction indexes for 10 economic sectors consisting of more than 200 companies. Each company’s ACSI is based on a sample of at least 250 customer interviews, and the ACSI conducts more than 65,000 customer interviews each year.

Smartphone web traffic growth is left in tablets’ wake
TABLET USERS are starting to dominate mobile web traffic consumption, according to Adobe, and are overshadowing the growth generated by their smartphone peers.
“Tablets are emerging as the consumer device of choice,” said Brad Rencher, SVP and GM of Digital Marketing Business at Adobe as he introduced the firm’s latest findings on the market.
He was talking about the Adobe Digital Index (PDF) that looks at how and where mobile browsers are mobile browsing. the report, which is of decent length for this sort of thing, does not break down devices used other than the vanilla “tablets” and “smartphones” descriptions, but does suggest that the Apple Ipad dominates.
Listed under its reasons for more tablet traffic growth is a line that suggests that “stonger competitors to the Ipad” will be released, adding that this will be “enabled by Microsoft’s release of Windows 8 and Google’s purchase of Motorola Mobility and planned co-branding of Android tablet devices”, which makes sense.
Tablet traffic is already increasing nicely and is growing at a rate 200 times faster than that produced by smartphones when they launched.
The report reveals that this means that one year after the Ipad was released tablets had around one per cent of the total web browsing market, while two years later tablets had over three per cent. by comparison, it took the Iphone a full three years to reach one per cent of total web visits.
Adobe said that in the last year tablet traffic has increased by 300 per cent and the firm added that tablets’ share of web site traffic will start to exceed smartphone traffic early next year before accounting for 10 per cent of total web site traffic in 2014.
It said smartphones have just over six per cent of the market and tablets have 4.3 per cent. µ

Siri changes her mind on which smartphone is the best ever
(Credit:Screenshot by Roger Cheng/CNET)
It was just last week that Apple’s virtual personal assistant Siri was telling the world that theNokia Lumia 900 was the best smartphone ever. but it appears now that she has been scolded back into the Apple fold.
WheniPhone 4S owners now ask Siri which smartphone is the best ever, she replies with a sarcastic, “you’re kidding, right?” A reader who tipped CNET to the change said Siri will also reply with “the one you’re holding” when asked the question. A CNET staffer on the West Coast also got “the one you’re holding” as an answer.

Apple’s virtual personal assistant made waves last week when users found that Siri would point to the Nokia Lumia 900 when asked which smartphone was the best ever. the result came from Wolfram Alpha, a service Siri often queries. Wolfram Alpha’s answer was based on “customer review average” across the Web.two CNET staffers in San Francisco, however, got Yelp results as a response.
Although it appears Apple has changed the answer Siri spits out, the company has not publicly said that it has, in fact, done so. CNET has contacted Apple for comment on the change and we will update this story when we have more information.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, if you ask Siri what the besttablet ever is, she’s firmly in line with her corporate overlords: “The Apple iPad is the best. and that’s not just my opinion.”

Siri Turns Against Her Creator, Calls Nokia Lumia 900 “Best Smartphone Ever”
When you build a robot or an artificially intelligent machine, there’s always going to be a fear that one day it will turn against you. That’s what Siri has done to Apple today, labeling one of the iPhone’s biggest rivals, the Nokia Lumia 900, the “best smartphone ever.”
If you’ve got an iPhone 4S, pull it out of your pocket now, call up Siri, and ask her, “What is the best smartphone ever?”
Rather than the humorous response you get to questions like, “What is the best smartphone?”, Siri will, surprisingly, tell you all about the Nokia Lumia 900, the Finnish firm’s flagship Windows Phone handset.
Of course, when you ask Siri a question, she’ll often find your answer from Wolfram Alpha, which is clearly what’s happening here; she’s just searching the service for the best smartphone based on “customer review average.” but even so, it must be a little embarrassing for Apple when its intelligent assistant pulls up a competitor when you ask her what the best smartphone ever is.
If you want our advice, don’t listen to everything Siri tells you.

restarttheuser – Home – Phorum Philly 2012
I recently attended a Phorum 2012, a Cloud Conference located at World Live Cafe in Philadelphia, PA. It was an all day event and featured keynotes, presentations and panel discussions with some the nation’s deepest thinkers and greatest innovators utilizing cloud technology.
Phorum is technology conference for business and IT professionals. the goal of the annual conference is to explore emerging technologies as they transition to mainstream adoption and to educate IT professionals on the practical application of these technologies in business.
In all, the event was highly informative and got me thinking outside of the box. There were many innovators, technology leaders, and forward thinkers that it opened my mind into the future, and all the new technology that I will have to learn in order to forward my career. Phorum is not strictly a Cloud Conference and I hope I can make it to next years event, whatever it may be.
