What fueled the iPod’s explosive growth several quarters after its debut was the opening of the iTunes music store. the iPod debited in late 2001 and the iTunes store opened its digital doors several quarters later.

The availability of commercial content for the iPod heightened its appeal and helped create a success story unrivaled this decade until the release of the Apple iPhone.

The opening of the iTunes app store occurred closer to the iPhone’s original debut than the iTunes music store opened relative to the release of the original iPod. Further, in some ways at its introduction the first iPods had kind of a split and confusing personality. I remember being at a technology conference for educators in May, 2002 at which the iPod was being pitched by the Apple marketing staff not as a digital music player but as a portable curriculum content device for teachers. I used my original iPod far more as a content storage and backup device than any other purpose.

The iPhone debuted with far more functionality for the user (phone, iPod, Web tool, etc.)while the iPod evolved into a much more functional device over several quarters after its initial release.

I think the link between content availability and hardware sales is unmistakeable. is it a surprise?

What fueled the rise in sales of Windows PCs in my view wasn’t that Windows itself was better than the Mac OS, but it was “good enough” in comparison when the availability of content (software) was taken into account. Developers helped sell Windows in the same way music helped sell the iPod and apps help sell the iPhone today. This is an old enterprise story merely involving new devices.

What’s not reflected on the graphs is the sale of the iPod touch which shares an OS and app availability with the iPhone. if one were to add the iPod touch sales numbers to the sales of the iPhone, the magnitude of the success of iPhone OS devices would be amplified even more.

The iPod numbers also include sales of the iPod shuffle which debuted in early 2005. This lower cost, lesser storage capacity iPod sold without a screen and sold in huge numbers. though an iPod and while it boosted iPod unit sales numbers, it can give a bit of a false read as to growth in sales of more fully equipped iPod models. In my view the graph of only the higher ASP iPods would provide a more economically accurate comparison when contrasting the timelines of success of the iPod and the iPhone. for many (including myself), the shuffle is a second iPod device. we won’t see many people carrying around two iPhones.

Two conclusions I draw from the graphs: Commercial content helps drive hardware sales and the early success of the iPhone is unprecedented with most likely much more success to come.

Nokia And Intel Join Forces On Smartphone Software

Nokia is working with Intel to produce another smartphone operating system called “Meego.”

Meego is the combination of Intel’s Moblin with Nokia’s Maemo, which are both linux based OSes.

Nokia tells the AP it will keep its Symbian OS as the “chosen platform,” but “MeeGo is about the next wave.”

Perhaps teaming up with Intel will land Nokia some new more powerful hardware, and some more investment dollars. otherwise, we don’t see why it would divert any resources to platform that’s not “chosen.”

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Nokia Corp. and Intel Corp. on Monday said they’re combining the software they’ve each been developing for smart phones, tablet computers and other Internet-connected devices.

The world’s largest maker of phones and the world’s largest maker of computer chips believe that together they have a better chance of competing in a crowded field of software systems that each hope to be as ubiquitous in mobile devices as Windows is on PCs.

The new software, to be released in the second quarter, will be called MeeGo. it will supersede Nokia’s Maemo, used in a few high-end phones, and Intel’s Moblin, which it has been developing with an aim to get its own chips into phones and somewhat larger, tablet-like “mobile Internet devices.”

The companies announced the combination on the first day of Mobile World Congress, the world’s largest cell phone trade show, in Barcelona.

The first phone powered by an Intel chip similar to the ones it makes for PCs was demonstrated in January by LG Electronics Inc. The prototype had a 4.8-inch screen, making it much larger than today’s phones.

Alternatives to MeeGo include Google Inc.’s Android software and Symbian, already used by Nokia in many phones. however, Symbian has lagged in supporting new must-have features for smart phones, like touch screens. Nokia started developing Maemo as a substitute for use in high-end phones.

“Symbian is the chosen platform for us for smart phones,” said Kai Oistamo, Nokia’s executive vice president for devices, in an interview. “MeeGo is about the next wave, where wireless devices will go next.”

Both Maemo and Moblin are based on Linux, the free operating system. MeeGo will be administered by the nonprofit Linux Foundation.

Programs written for the chips Nokia uses in its phones won’t immediately run on devices using Intel’s chips. however, the companies said a software tool called Qt will let developers convert applications between the two chip families.

most important game developer conference, GDC Europe. as GDC organizer UBM

promises a completely new and overwhelming gaming experience: “We want to
flood the players with stimuli in a positive sense. what we want to achieve
is that the first thing you’ll have to do is catch your breath. We intend to
have a lot of things happening at all times so there will be an incredible
amount of information to take in, no matter whether you’re playing in 3D or
2D, and no matter what sound system you use.”

Hulst’s talk at GDC Europe in Cologne will be located somewhere in the
field of tension between hardware and software. in his keynote address he
will discuss how the studio has matured, which obstacles had to be overcome
and what some of the ingredients behind the success of the Killzone series
are.

“We are excited to welcome to the GDC Europe stage such a prominent
European developer and industry figure such as Hulst,” said Frank Sliwka, GDC
Europe Event Director. “The Killzone series and work produced from Guerrilla
Games is exemplar of the ingenuity of European developers.”
