Shonn Greene is ready to get behind the wheel and drive. And that means not just motoring with the rock against the Ravens in two days but sharing the wheel in whatever way Rex Ryan and Brian Schottenheimer determine.

Green, the second-year veteran, parried every attempt to draw him out on his true feelings on being the Jets’ no. 1 back but in the same backfield with Hall of Famer-to-be LaDainian Tomlinson.

“It’s going good,” he said about the relationship between him and Tomlinson. “We push each other, as we should. And the thing about me and him is I think we both can get the job done. so whoever’s in there, we’re going to strive for each other and push for each other.”

I asked him about “probably” (Coach Ryan’s word) starting the season as a starter again, something he hadn’t done in two years, or since his senior season at Iowa. is this a special time for him? how fired up is he to be the top tailback for his team again?

Greene deftly turned the “I” back into a “we.”

“Yeah, I’m pumped. I’m ready to start the season,” he said. “We just got done with a long offseason, with the preseason, so I think everybody’s a little anxious to get the real thing started.”

The great thing about Year 2 of Ground & Pound is that so far, before a single play has been run in the regular season, the Jets appear to have every bit as strong a two-headed backfield as they had last year or any year since Curtis Martin couldn’t carry the load anymore. Greene still is packing his punch.

“The guy runs hard,” said backup guard Rob Turner. “He’d just as soon run over somebody as run around him.”

And in the most active preseason of his storied career, Tomlinson showed that old giddyup with the 43-yard burst against the Redskins and a 5.9-yard average on 22 carries.

“I saw that right away,” Greene said of the classic LT form. “From the beginning, I wasn’t one of those who thought he had lost it. I’m still a huge fan of his.”

With the kind of summer Tomlinson has had, it’s easy to overlook Greene just a little, but that would be dangerous for opponents. SG had his coming-out game in Week 7 at Oakland after Leon Washington went down.

And if you want to throw out that 19-carry, 144-yard game, that would be OK. Once Greene started getting the ball regularly with the Carolina game (which perhaps coincidentally coincided with the Jets’ 7-2 finish through the AFC title game), he got 118 carries and averaged 5.3 yards a pop.

Sure, there are injury worries from outside due to his aggressive style, and sophomore jinx concerns no doubt as well. but Greene says he’s completely healthy and he talks like a humble young man who is about to play a key role in whatever lies ahead in 2010.

The guys who are blocking for him say they have a good feeling about no. 23.

Nick Mangold: “He’s still learning. He’s got a lot of great natural instinct and ability. He’s made good progress from last year to this year. I think he’s taking his role very seriously. He’s trying to excel as best he can. I think he’s doing a good job.”

Turner: “There probably were questions about why he was a third-rounder when he was drafted, but at the end of last year and obviously during the playoffs, he showed up and put himself out there.”

As for the effect Greene and Tomlinson together can have as the Jets attempt to become just the sixth team since the 1970 merger to notch back-to-back no. 1 rushing seasons, tackle Damien Woody likes what he’s seeing.

“Our goal is to be ascendant as the season progresses,” D-Wood said. “We feel we’ve got really good players in place, really talented runners in the backfield who complement each other very well. the line is in sync. I think we’re doing pretty well.

“So now we’ve got one more practice to get it tuned up. And on Monday we’ll put it on the showroom floor.”

New York Jets 2010 NFL Preview, Schedule, Odds, and Predictions: the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and in this case it landed in the big Apple. Rex Ryan, son of former Philadelphia Eagles Coach Buddy Ryan who was an aggressive defensive coach, landed last year with the New York Jets and started making big predictions. he still is, but last year cards fell in place, starting in Indianapolis when they rested their starters, then again the same with Cincinnati. Boom, the Jets made the playoffs and were 23 minutes away from going to the Super Bowl. this year, Vegas oddsmakers have the New York Jets as +950 odds to win the 2011 Super Bowl and Ryan is predicting a championship this year!

Head football coach Rex Ryan is brash and bold, but so far he has been able to back it up with a very successful campaign. he has accumulated the right staff to keep it going. Brian Schottenheimer (offense), Mike Pettine (defense) and Mike Westhoff (special teams) are all strong coordinators and will likely be head coaching candidates in the future. the staff and management have been aggressive off the field as well adding key pieces to continue the momentum they established late last season. the odds makers at BookMaker have the New York Jets listed at +500 odds to win the 2010 AFC Championship.

Offensively the Jets had the number one rushing attack in the NFL and let go their two leading rushers and still plan to use coach Ryan’s Ground and Pound philosophy. Shonn Greene ran for 540 yards on 108 carries for a 5.0-yard average and had a great playoff with 2 100+ yard games and the free agent signing of future hall of famer LaDainian Tomlinson gives them another strong duo. Quarterback Mark Sanchez, who had a so so rookie year that was successful but not very good statistically, will be given a bigger role this year. he has some weapons as the Jets kept Braylon Edwards and acquired Santonio Holmes from the Steelers on the cheap, mostly because of off-field problems and a four-game suspension for drug usage. the Vegas odds makers have the New York Jets listed at -105 odds to win the 2010 AFC East.

Defensively this is Coach Ryan’s specialty. the hold out of shut down corner Darrelle Revis will be a problem if it is not resolved by the regular season, although it looks as if it will. As insurance the Jets drafted Wilson Kyle a cornerback out of Boise State in the first round. they also signed free agent Jason Taylor away from rival Miami. the odds makers at BookMaker have the New York Jets middle number listed at over/under 9 1/2 wins for the 2010 NFL regular season.

Expectations are high and the Jets got a lot of breaks at the end of last season to give them the confidence they carried through the playoffs. Watch for Sanchez to have a sophomore slump and the team to struggle toward the end of the season. Report: Jets Release Laveranues Coles

Laveranues Coles has spent much of his 10-year NFL career with the new York Jets, but the former Pro-Bowler appears to be on his way out.

Coles joined the Jets this offseason, presumably as an insurance policy for the suspended Santonio Holmes, but the Jets released him on Sunday so as to avoid paying his full $850,000 veteran-minimum salary, reports the new York Post.

Still, Coles may return to the Jets on a week-to-week basis, which would save new York money.

Coles has caught 459 passes in seven years with the team, but the Jets have compiled a crowded receiving core featuring Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Brad Smith, Jerricho Cotchery and David Clowney.

Coles caught 43 passes for the Bengals last season.

The Jets are expected to have a more balanced offensive attack in 2010, but don’t expect them to go away from Ground & Pound anytime soon. in the final summer dress rehearsal for the starters tonight, the Green & White’s run game looked to be in midseason form against the Redskins as LaDainian Tomlinson, a shifty and explosive future Hall of Famer, and Shonn Greene, a bulldozer in just his second season, proved to be a prolific pair.

In three quarters of work, Tomlinson and Greene combined for 142 yards on the ground. They were effective immediately as the 5’11”, 226-pound Greene rushed three times on the Jets’ opening drive for 18 yards. that helped them get out of the gates with an early lead as Nick Folk was true from 45 yards.

But it was Tomlinson who electrified fans with a charge of his own, displaying his legendary footwork and vision as he got free off left tackle for a 43-yard boost.

“We’re going to work well together,” Tomlinson said of him and Greene. “As you can see, he comes in and runs over people and pounds people, and I come in and slash, so we’re thunder and lightning. That’s what we’re going to be.”

That 43-yard chunk was Tomlinson’s 15th touch of the preseason — the most ever for the former Charger in his 10-year NFL career.

“It was a zone scheme and I cut it back. The line did a great job of pushing everybody back. Once I cut it back, I had the safety coming downhill and I knew he was coming too fast to be able to tackle me once I made a move on him,” he said. “I made the move on him and kind of hit my receiver a little bit, trying to get behind him and kept my balance and was able to get up the field.”

Despite turning 31 in June, Tomlinson is a man on a mission and he brings a big-play capability the Jets didn’t have in the backfield when they opened the 2009 regular season. with less than five minutes remaining in the opening half, LT got low and bounced out to the edge while gaining 16 yards up the left sideline. Then with just seconds before intermission, his 14-yard scamper out of a shotgun draw allowed new York’s AFC representative to attempt a 62-yard Folk field goal.

When the Jets signed Tomlinson in the offseason to join an emerging force in Greene, many wondered who would start. but it looks like the Jets have two No. 1 backs capable of doing damage and sharing the load. in the first half, Greene carried eight times for 36 yards and Tomlinson also got eight carries for a scintillating 85 yards.

“What we did today was great,” Greene said. “I think we can do a lot better than that if we played the whole game and wore the defense down. We’ll be a dangerous combination.”

Trailing, 9-5, with 6:46 left in the third, Rex Ryan elected to keep his first offense in for one final possession. The result was the starters’ second TD in the preseason as a 15-play, 72-yard march took the home team into the fourth quarter and ended on a scoring hookup from Mark Sanchez to Dustin Keller. but Greene and Tomlinson figured prominently once again with Greene rushing twice for 16 yards to get the drive going and then No. 21 getting exactly 9 on a third-down catch to keep the chains moving inside the red zone.

“That was a big play. we obviously needed that to put points on the board. Anytime you’re in third-down situations, we’re thinking first down and continue that drive,” said Tomlinson as the Jets got to the ‘Skins 11. “I knew that the guys had kind of got out of there and they were going to leave me room to work. Once Mark threw it to me, I turned around and saw a couple of guys but I was able to get to the first-down marker before I got tackled.”

Even though the running game got on track, the Jets’ ones turned the ball over twice in opposing territory and the Green & White didn’t throw the ball consistently. but they can again hang their hat on another solid rush performance as last year’s No. 1 ground attack — which didn’t used slash weapon Brad Smith in the backfield in preseason play — averaged a healthy 5.0 yards on 32 carries.

“One thing I think people need to understand is we’ve been very vanilla this preseason,” said Tomlinson, who called the Jets line the best he’s been around. “We’ve run basic plays, and I know at times it doesn’t look like we’re doing very good, but these are basic plays we’re running so we’re executing them. we won’t really game-plan until the season starts, so we’re doing fine.”
