New York Jets 2010 Season Predictions | NFL Online Fansite

The New York Jets turned a mediocre regular season into a near Super Bowl appearance in 2009, as the Jets snuck their way into the playoffs at 9-7. The Jets went on to beat the Cincinnati Bengals and San Diego Chargers before falling victim to the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game. The late season success and the additions of some big time players this offseason has many believing that the Jets are primed for a huge season in 2010. here is a look at what the Jets will bring to the table on both offense and defense this season, plus my prediction on where they finish the year in the AFC East.

Offense: what really made the Jets season impressive was the fact that they did it with rookie quarterback mark Sanchez. Unlike Matt Ryan who really came in and played well leading Atlanta to the playoffs a couple years ago, Sanchez was asked simply to hand off the football, as they learned the hard way when they tried to let him throw. Sanchez finished the year with just 12 touchdowns to 20 interceptions, and I wonder if he has the talent to lead this team to victory when they need a score late in a game.

The Jets replaced veteran running back Thomas Jones with future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson, a move that really doesn’t make a lot of since to me. The Jets have to be hoping they can turn Tomlinson’s career around after really struggling to do much of anything in 2009. The Jets feature back in 2010 will be Shonn Greene, and if this guy can stay healthy he figures to put up some big time numbers this season.

The Jets traded for Braylon Edwards in the middle of last season, and went out and traded for Santonio Holmes this offseason, giving them a very solid 1-2 punch on the outside. Holmes does have to miss the first four games due to a suspension, but the addition of Holmes will allow Jerricho Cotchery to move back to the slot and open up the middle even more for tight end Dustin Keller.

The offensive line was one of the best the NFL had to offer in 2009, and even though they lose Pro Bowl left guard Alan Flaneca they figure to be very good again in 2010. it looks as though rookie Vladimir Ducasse has the early edge at taking over for Flaneca, but also keep an eye on second year player Matt Slauson.

Defense: The Jets figure to have one of the best defenses in all of football this season, and a big reason for that is they figure to have the best secondary in all of football. The Jets already had arguably the best corner in football in Darrelle Revis, but got even better at the position by trading for Antonio Cromartie and drafting Kyle Wilson with their first round pick. Jim Leonhard returns at strong safety, while newcomer Brodney Pool is expected to start at the open free safety spot.

At linebacker the Jets added veteran Jason Taylor this offseason, and while he doesn’t figure to start, he should fit very nicely with what the Jets are trying to do. Taylor will team up with Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas on the outside, while Bart Scott and David Harris form a very dangerous duo in the middle.

Up front the Jets are hoping that nose tackle Kris Jenkins can return to form after missing most of last season with a knee injury, but have a solid backup in Sione Pouha. Shaun Ellis is the Jets best defensive lineman, but likely only has a couple big years left in the tank. Mike DeVito, Rodrique Wright, and Vernon Gholston look to split time at the other end spot.

Prediction – 3rd AFC East: The Jets were just 2-4 in AFC East play last season. I have the Patriots as my favorites to win the division, and I have the Dolphins surprising everyone by finishing second. The Jets still could make the postseason via the wild card.

Rex Ryan's Quirks Are Definition of 21st Century Motivation – New …

Rex Ryan’s Quirks Are Definition of 21st Century Motivation

Even if doubters would say that the new York Jets’ 2010 playoff run was a fluke, nobody will say that about the team’s success in the upcoming season.

They are simply too talented after adding Santonio Holmes, LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Cromartie, and Jason Taylor among others. That’s a lot of fantasy points and Pro Bowls to swoop up at once.

Even so, talent fails a good portion of the time. just ask the Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers of recent memory, and the Washington Redskins of the last decade and a half.

When talent succeeds, it does so because of coaching.

That is exactly what has been and will be the case for the new-look new York Jets.

Simply put, Rex Ryan is a winner.

Obviously, Ryan has quite the coaching pedigree as the son of Super Bowl winning coaching curmudgeon Buddy Ryan and with a successful stint as Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator on his resume, but that’s not the point.

Sure, it doesn’t hurt that Rex Ryan is a great defensive mind. So is Dick LeBeau, but he clearly couldn’t succeed as an NFL head coach. The point is that Rex Ryan is a master motivator.

Clearly, most coaches don’t go on television and challenge opposing players and their families to fights.

Most also don’t cry in press conferences after losses, but maybe Rex is on to something. if you watched the Jets on the field last year, you probably noticed that they played really hard. Perhaps, by being willing to be public and put his money where his mouth is, he got his team to do the same. maybe by being willing to cry for his team, he showed them what it is to be passionate about winning.

He also clearly can be one of the guys, dropping F-bombs like he was on an Eminem album.

Since the playoffs, Ryan has continued to be a public figure. he was very open about his off-season gastric-band surgery and even more open about changing jerseys at a Carolina Hurricanes game.

When we next see Rex on HBO’s Hard Knocks, he may be a much skinner person, but you should expect him to be the same otherwise. Last year, Chad Ochocinco’s antics and predictions on the show may have helped the Cincinnati Bengals to a strong season (though previously there was a “Hard Knocks curse”).

Don’t be surprised if Rex Ryan does the exact same thing.

Think about who the best coaches in the NFL have been in the last decade or so. With the exception of Tony Dungy, nearly all of them are controversial figures. John Gruden, bill Belichick, Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin and Tom Coughlin all have their quirks and deal with the media in unique ways. all have rings.

In the 21st century, that is the kind of motivation that works, and it sure worked for the Jets last season.

We are in an era of TMZ, Twitter and YouTube. The players know it and are part of it. Coaches just can’t motivate in traditional ways. They have to be a little bit crazy.

And look at it this way, no matter what crazy stunts Rex pulls, Buddy will probably always have him beat with this one:
