New Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer mode announced • News • Xbox 360 • Eurogamer.net

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3′s second DLC collection, due out later this month, includes a new multiplayer mode called Face-Off, developer Infinity Ward has announced.

It’s a one-on-one or two-on-two deathmatch mode featuring four brand new maps custom built for more intimate combat.

The first two stages will be available for free to all Xbox 360 players from 15th May, with a PC and PlayStation 3 roll-out to follow. Aground is set on a shipwreck off the coast of Scotland, while Erosion sees you running around Roman ruins in Italy while Mount Vesuvius erupts in the background.

Two more maps will then follow on 22nd May (again, it’s a timed Xbox 360 exclusive) as part of the main DLC Collection 2 release. Getaway plays out in a beachside mansion in Brazil, while Lookout is set in a forward observation post in Afghanistan.

“Normally in itself one-on-one isn’t particularly creatively innovative, but what we’ve done is design the maps deliberately for this style of play,” Modern Warfare 3 executive producer mark Rubin told Eurogamer.

“In normal map development you have large maps that have long sight lines, then when you make smaller maps you shorten the sight line – the engagement distance becomes smaller when the map becomes smaller.

“But with these Face-Off maps, because it’s not six-on-six, we’ve made the sight lines longer for the size of the map that it is. you actually end up engaging quicker and having a more exciting experience on the map.

“You still get a really new feel and experience out of the gameplay; not just the heavy, frantic experience you would get out of a normal multiplayer match. you get more tension build-up on these smaller maps.”

DLC Collection 2 will also offer three new standard multiplayer maps. two of them have already been released via Elite – Sanctuary and Foundation – but one is brand new. Titled Oasis, it’s set on a beach resort in the United Arab Emirates.

“It’s actually in or near one of the levels from single player – the one that takes place in UAE. you can see part of that level in the background in this level. It’s all new geo but it’s in the same area,” explained Rubin.

Then in addition to all that, there are two new Spec Ops co-op missions too.

Ironclad is set immediately after the Hamburg mission from the single player campaign, with you and a comrade attempting to make it back to the landing beach after the initial assault.

“It has that asynchronous combat that we’ve been focusing on, where one player does one thing and another does something completely different,” said Rubin.

“One player is on the ground and has to clear obstacles and engage in basic infantry combat. then you have another guy driving a tank and you both have to support each other and get back to the beaches.”

The second Spec Ops mission, titled Killswitch, plays out in an all-new area set in a Russian dockyard.

“One person is on the ground sneaking through and the other is in a sniper perch, sniping for the other player. you have to get through the level and detonate an EMP at the end.”

What to Expect on a Zip Line Excursion

If you are looking to take a break from lounging at the beach and want to put some excitement into your day take a zip line tour. Zip lining is an excellent way to get both your nature and adventure fix. Most of the tours you will find in the Caribbean will take you through the canopy of a jungle and involve a moderate hike. Zip lining definitely provides an adrenaline rush. I was so nervous my legs were shaking uncontrollably before my first launch, but by the time the tour was done I wanted to go again here is a breakdown of what to expect of a zip line tour.

Time:Expect to spend about half a day on a zip line tour. much of the time is spent on the bus ride, the hike, and waiting in the lines. the zips themselves are pretty fast.

Cost: Most zip line tours are going to run you around $80-$100 which includes transfer from your hotel.

Tour: Once you get to launch platform a guide will strap you in and as soon as you lift your feet they will set you free. during the initial few feet you will drop down a little bit, this is supposed to happen so don’t worry. Approaching the end of the zip line it will look as if you are about to hit the tree in front of you, but you won’t. There are braking systems that both the user as well as the guides can control and a guide will be at the end to help you with your landing. Some tours focus mainly on just straight zips while others may get a little more adventurous with straight down rappels or angled zips.

Weather: Most tours still operate if it is raining and the rain causes you to fly faster so expect a little more excitement.

What to wear: Closed toed shoes are a requirement. you are not able to take a purse or backpack with your on the zips; you will be asked to leave your items behind. Some tours will offer lockers at a price, but some may not so don’t risk it. I suggest wearing cargo pants with pockets that zip or dig through your box of 80′s gear and bust out that fanny pack you have been dying to wear again. Shorts are fine to wear but you may want to opt with long pants if you are worried about bug bites.

Photos: Most tours will have an option to buy photos that they take during the zips. I suggest each member of your group have a camera with them so you can take pictures of each other; you absolutely will not have time to be passing the camera back and forth.

Overall experience:I give it a 10 if your vacation spot offers a zip line tour do not pass this up, I promise it will be the highlight of your trip.

Nats’ Harper injures himself after going 0-for-5

Apparently frustrated by his 0-for-5, three-strikeout effort against the Reds on Friday night, 19-year-old Washington Nationals sensation Bryce Harper injured himself when a bat he used to hit a wall struck him above the left eye.

      From Tom Groeschen’s game story:

Late in the game, Harper had blood on the left side of his face. While playing right field, Harper wiped the blood between pitches. It was unclear what had happened to cause the bleeding.

According to Amanda Comak, Nationals beat writer for the Washington Times, Harper needed 10 stitches but didn’t feel dazed, and said he has no intention of missing a game.

Here’s a link to video of Nats (and former Reds) skipper Davey Johnson discussing the incident.

Here are some Tweets about it:

@AdamKilgoreWP: Bryce Harper had a golf ball-sized lump over his eye, clumps of blood in his hair. 10 stitches. “I’m fine,” he said. wants to play tomorrow.

@acomak: Line of the night goes to Ian Desmond, who said “It’s not Bryce. from now on he’s Bam Bam.” #nats

@gkicinski: Davey Johnson said #Bryce Harper was frustrated after making an out; went into the tunnel with a bat, hit the wall, bat hit him above eye.

@Adam_1224: Bryce Harper tried to bash a wall in anger and hit himself in the face. The bat and wall are suspended 6 games. #dontTouchTheGoldenBoy

@dcuniverse: Given the way the #Nats are pushing game-used merchandise, I’m assuming we’ll be able to buy towels with Bryce Harper’s blood on them, yeah?

@proxli: He fought the wall, and the… wall won. (Bryce Harper) #Nats

iPhone Coming To T-Mobile This Year?

T-Mobile is preparing to make changes to their wireless network that will make it compatible with Apple’s iPhone, the company announced today. They have partnered with Nokia Siemens Networks and Ericsson to roll out a $4 billion network upgrade that will enhance the company’s 4G network by rolling out broader LTE coverage.

T-Mobile’s current 4G network is reliant on HSPA+ technology. while arguably fast enough to earn the “4G” moniker, it is not as fast as the LTE networks currently operated by Verizon and AT&T (and currently being built by Sprint). Lacking sufficient wireless spectrum to build a full-sized LTE network, though, T-Mobile insists that HSPA+ counts.

The network improvements will utilize the wireless spectrum licenses T-Mobile acquired from AT&T due to the breakup of the proposed merger. T-Mobile is planning to bring LTE coverage to 75% of their top 25 markets (i.e., 18-19 markets). their HSPA+ network is currently available in 229 markets.

Quibbling about what counts as 4G aside, though, this move is a big one for T-Mobile, as the expanded HSPA+ network will improve the carrier’s compatibility with the iPhone. the iPhone 4S is compatible with HSPA+ networks, but not with T-Mobile’s current AWS spectrum network. That incompatibility is the main reason that T-Mobile is the only one of the four major U.S. carriers that does not carry the iPhone.

Rolling out a more widespread HSPA+ network accomplishes two things for T-Mobile. first, it makes the carrier more attractive to iPhone users with unlocked phones who bring them to T-Mobile to get activated on the company’e network. second, and more importantly, it makes T-Mobile more attractive to Apple. as T-Mobile itself has admitted, the lack of the iPhone has hurt the carrier tremendously in recent years.

T-Mobile has been hoping for the iPhone for a long time, and has hinted several times that they might finally be getting it. Back in January T-Mobile’s chief technology officer, Neville Ray, said that the next iPhone would carry a chipset supports T-Mobile’s AWS network. if that is so, then improving their 4G capabilities is bound to make T-Mobile even more attractive to Apple, especially considering the fact that the next iPhone will almost certainly have 4G LTE capabilities. By adding some LTE coverage and improving HSPA+ coverage, T-Mobile ensures that customers can take at least partial advantage of their device’s capabilities on T-Mobile’s network.

T-Mobile’s network improvements begin today and are expected to take much of the rest of the year. T-Mobile is expected to announce their quarterly earnings later this week.

What do you think? Would you switch to T-Mobile if they had the iPhone? Let us know in the comments.
