Boise State men’s basketball team seeks to extend home winning streak

Taco Bell Arena isn’t exactly known as a hostile venue for opposing teams. but the Boise State men’s basketball team is intent on changing that.

The Broncos have won 14 straight home games, tied for the 15th-longest streak in the country, entering Monday night’s game against Fresno State.

Boise State (8-3) is 8-0 at home this season, the best start to a home schedule since the Broncos went 13-0 at home in the 1997-98 season. Boise State has not lost at Taco Bell Arena since Feb. 3 against Hawaii.

“It’s about the toughness to defend the home court,” said second-year coach Leon Rice, who is 20-4 at home with the Broncos.

It’s also a pretty good sign of success for your program.

Perennial powers Duke and Kentucky currently share the longest active home win streak at 40 games. Ohio State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Temple, North Carolina and Belmont all have current home winning streaks of at least 21 games.

Several lengthy home streaks have already been snapped this season, including at Utah State (33 games), Alabama (24), Wisconsin (23) and Arizona (22).

It’ll be quite a while before Taco Bell Arena can get close to the reputation of Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium or Kentucky’s Rupp Arena, but if the Broncos can sustain their success, perhaps they can convince more fans to come see them play.

The Broncos are averaging 3,462 fans per home game this season.

“You don’t like somebody coming in your home and taking that away from you,” sophomore forward Thomas Bropleh said. “You’re expected to win at home. For us to go out and keep winning at home, it’s good for the community.”

The Broncos have struggled away from home, losing all three road contests.

“at home, for some reason, we just want it more than the other team,” senior Westley Perryman said.

Monday’s game is the first of two nonconference games against Fresno State (4-7), which will join Boise State in the Mountain West next season. Boise State visits Fresno State on Jan. 2.
