Apple’s In Car Remote Control Device May Interfere with Steering Wheel Operation

Automakers are not the only ones looking for hands-free infotainment solutions to make consumers happy. Apple has now introduced a steering-wheel mounted clickwheel which can be used to control other Apple devices such as an iPad, iPod or iPhone. The steering-wheel-mounted remote control allows drivers to change songs, playlists or internet radio stations without taking their eyes off the road.

Powered by a button-style battery the remote’s clip-on base can accommodate a variety of steering wheel rim widths. There’s no provision to mount it to the center of the steering wheel, to prevent injury in case of an airbag deployment. The controller face can be rotated so that the menu button is always on top; the play button is always on the bottom, re wind is always to the left and fast forward is always to the right. The device could interfere with steering wheel operation so there’s no way we’ll know if the product will actually be developed. Also patent filing doesn’t necessarily mean a product will be built.
