2005 Dreamcast Shmup ‘Under Defeat’ Coming to the PS3 With an HD Remake
Publisher Rising Star Games invites us all to travel back to the halcyon days of 2005 for this indie-developed shooter for SEGA’s defunct system.this NAOMI-engine shooter was created by Japanese developer G.rev for arcades back in ’05 and one year later made the leap to consoles on the Dreamcast. Now there are a lot of quirks to this particular title: one, well, it was a Dreamcast game in 2006; two, its a top-down helicopter shooter that puts you in the cockpit of a chopper piloted by what’s essentially a Nazi (the German members of the game’s “Empire” against the nefarious members of the English-speaking “Union.”
The HD remake is coming to the PS3 this fall with a new 16:9 presentation, improved artwork, textures, shading, and, you know, bad German dudes. (Along with the comedy manga Hetalia: Axis Powers, Japan’s been continuing to try to cute up WWII). The Deluxe Edition version of Under Defeat will include a digital art book, all of the DLC, a soundtrack CD from the New Order Mode, and a letter from the game’s Executive Producer and G.rev CEO, Hiroyuki Maruyama.
I’ve included some stills from the game along with its PS3 box art:
